CHAPTER 10: HOOKY
Wednesday, August 25, 2014
“Hey Mom” I said.
“Hi, sweetie!”
“So, Katie and I want to skip school today and go shopping. Is that okay?” I asked.
Katie dropped her spoon in her oatmeal. She looked pissed.
“Of course, sweetie. It’s so nice you and your sister want to spend time together. Do you need a ride to the mall?”
“Are you serious?” Katie asked in disbelief.
“Why wouldn’t I be?” Mom retorted.
“Okay, well, we’ll be back around 4:00. See you soon!”
“Bye girls!” she said as I dragged Katie to the door to find Blane on my porch with white daisies.
“Carter!” he said. “Aaand Katie.” he said in disbelief.
“Hi Blane. I would talk but Katie and I are in a hurry. See you later.” I said pushing past him.
“Carter I know I screwed up but give me another chance!”
I didn’t respond. I couldn’t handle going through this again.
Katie got in the drivers seat of the Mercedes and ignited the engine. I hopped in and we drove off while Blane just stood in my driveway like a kid whose ice-cream just got stolen.
“Where to?” I asked.
“First, we hit Nordstrom’s. Then, we loop around Saks and Neiman’s. That should take care of shoes. Hm, we better hit the local shops too, so you don’t look like a loser transfer student. We better hit Sephora for some makeup too. Your no makeup look was cute in eighth grade but now it’s a little absurd, hun.”
“Wow thanks sis.”
“Hey, you wanted my help here it is!”
After we hit probably every store in the mall, our hands were weighted by pounds of clothes. Katie, of course, bought some stuff for herself, but the rest was all for me. Katie said I looked ‘totally hot,’ but this realm of physical beauty was new to me… and I kind of liked it.
When we got home, I ran into my room and smiled. Today was such a great day, well, other than the totally lame Blane surprise. He was so first day of school. Now, I’m ready. I’m ready to tackle school. I’m ready to assimilate.
I fell asleep with the lovely thought in my head.
