"What made you come back now?"

When I was in high school, I didn't make the best choices. The majority of high school girls that I went to school with were responsible enough to avoid teenage pregnancy. I, on the other hand, was not. I had been seeing this guy, Cody, for almost a year and one thing led to another. The next thing you know, I was pregnant. I thought of all people, Cody would be man enough to stick around and help me, but I was wrong. When I told him I was pregnant, he packed up and left me. He wasn't even there for her birth or to even sign her birth certificate. When I had my daughter Lacey, it was the best day of my life.

Today was just like any other day. I had woke Lacey up for school and put her on the bus and began to do some cleaning around the house. I wasn't a stay at home mom, I basically worked from home. It was easier for me then going to a 9-5 office job five days a week doing something I hated. I had done a few hours worth of work when I was interrupted by a knock on the door.

I got up and opened the door revealing the last person I was expecting, Cody. "Cody.." I said. "Hey, can we talk?" he asked. I nodded, stepping aside to let him in. Once settled on the sofa in the living room, I began to talk. "What did you wanna talk about?" I asked. "I know I am not getting father of the year. I know I haven't been there at all for her. But I want to be." he said. I was shocked by what he just said. Anger and annoyance quickly beginning to rise inside of me. "Why now? Cody, you've had 7 years to step up and be there for her. What made you want to do this now of all times?" I asked, the annoyance clear in my voice. "Because I want her to know who her father is. I want her to grow up in a happy home. I miss you Lea. I know it's been seven years since high school and that you probably don't feel the same but still. I love you. I have always loved you. I loved you even when I left when you said you were pregnant. I wanted to come back as soon as I left, but I didn't. My only reason for that being I thought you didn't want me to come back. I don't want to be a dead-beat dad. I know you grew up in a single parent house hold and you and I can agree that we don't want Lacey growing up with that." he said. "Cody, I wanted you to come back. I would have easily let you back in." I said, tears beginning to form. "Will you please take me back? I need you and Lacey, Lea. Give me a chance to prove to her and you that I can be a father, a real father. " he said, taking my hand in his.

"Cody, I-" "Please Lea." he begged. "I swear to god if you mess this up and hurt her I will personally kill you." I said. He began smiling and he took me in his arms. "I promise you Lea, I won't let you down." he said, hugging me tightly. "Lacey is going to be home soon." I said.

I heard the bus pull up and I opened the door, welcoming Lacey home with open arms and a big hug. "Hey sweetie, how was school today?" I asked, taking her back pack. "It was good! We got to color and have 15 extra minutes at recess!" she exclaimed, heading to the cabinets for her daily after school snack. "Lacey, there is someone I want you to meet." I said. She came over to the living room in her cute dress, her pony tail bouncing behind her. "Lacey, this is your dad." I said, moving to the side, revealing a smiling Cody.

"Hi Lacey." he said, squatting to get at eye level with her. "Hi.." she said cautiously. "I'm your dad." he said. "That's what Mommy says." she replied. "How has school today?" he asked. "Good. Mommy can I eat my snack now?" she asked, looking back at me. "Of course sweetie, go ahead." I smiled. When she was out of the room, Cody began to speak. "She doesn't like me does she?" he asked. "Well I mean, she did just meet her father, the person who technically didn't want to be a part of her life for the last 7 years of her life." I said.

It took Lacey a few weeks of Cody moving in and living with us for her to get used to him. Eventually, she began to like him. "Hey Lacey, how was school?" he asked, taking her back pack. "Good, we had to talk about a family member today." she said. "Oh yeah? Who did you talk about?" Cody asked. I had been sitting in the kitchen, getting dinner ready. "You." she smiled at him. "Me? What about me?" he asked. "I talked about how you've been a great dad and how happy you make mommy." she said. With those words leaving her lips, Cody let a tear slip. "Daddy don't cry." she said, wiping his tears away with her small hands. "I'm sorry sweetie, I just didn't expect you to say that." he smiled. "You're my daddy and I love you." she smiled, giving him one of the many hugs he would receive.
