"When you see her, say a prayer and kiss your heart goodbye." (Who's That Girl by Madonna)

Word Count: 2026

LILLI WAS... SHOCKED.

No. More than that.

There's a word for it, but it couldn't come to her mind. Her brain didn't register really anything in those first dead silent seconds after Peter spoke.

Then her body reacted, yet again before her brain could fully comprehend what was happening. Lilli lunged forward and threw her arms around Peter, squashing his body in a tight embrace.

Under his strange prison outfit, she felt bones. He felt so incomplete, like there was nothing to him.

"Peter," Lilli whispered into Peter's neck. "Oh my God."

Warren, however, was more suspicious. Lilli supposed he paid more attention to whenever Charles told the X-Men to be careful as there are still shape shifters.

"Peter, what was the first thing I ever said to you?" Warren asked suspiciously.

"Nantucket wallflower." Peter responded. Lilli didn't lift her head, but she felt Warren wrap his arms around Lilli and Peter as well. She assumed it was an inside joke or a ploy to throw off shapeshifters.

"Come on, we gotta get out of here," Peter said, breaking the hug. He kept eyeing Warren like he had something to say, but for some reason he was holding his tongue. Whatever. Lilli didn't care about anything other than one of her best friends being alive.

"You're right. But where are we going to go?" Warren said from beside Lilli.

Peter sighed and visibly lost an inch as he hugged himself. "I don't know," he muttered. "I'm hungry. Can't think of anything else."

"I know where to go." Lilli suddenly said, her eyes brightening.

...

The next hour was stressful. Peter had ended up not being strong enough to walk on his own and crawling back through the tunnel was stressful. Not nearly as much as getting him up the steps to the alley.

Once they were far from Kezing's headquarters, and from prying eyes of locals,  Lilli turned them all visible. They were hiding in a copse of pine trees and Peter was propped against a tree looking wiped out.

"I'll go steal some food," Lilli said hurriedly, worried about Peter.

"How?" Warren asked in a hushed tone. "Doesn't whatever you pick up stay visible?"

"I worked with... Charles... about it. I've got it down." Lilli said. "I'll be back soon."

She whirled around before Warren said something and turned invisible as she sprinted away. They were about a quarter mile from Main Street and Lilli was there right away. She quickly scanned for a store with food and a store with bags.

After she located the stores she needed, she wondered how she would get to them. The sidewalks were packed and the roads busy. She, for obvious reasons , couldn't simply walk across the street and on the sidewalks, running into people.

Soon, a plan formed in Lilli's mind. Dangerous, yes, but it was her only option. Peter's health was the only thing thing on her mind as she sprinted into the street and jumped onto the hood of a car and waited until it was passing the shop with the bags. She leapt off and rolled to the sidewalk, dancing around people and sneaking in behind a man into the store. She did okay in her humble opinion until the man slowed down and she walked right into him and he spun around to see nothing.
