It was October eight and it was none other than Evelyn's birthday. Evelyn closed the door behind her zippering her coat to the top, the cold autumn breeze was beginning to dawn over the city just as the trees were losing its leaves. She strode past a bunch of apartment buildings into a very quiet alley. She tried focusing on the complicated chemistry papers she had been studying for the whole night, though she'd read over the material it seemed like a blur. To her great misfortune the test was on her most special day.

Sudden whistling reached her ears interrupting her studying. Evelyn turned her head to see nothing but the squirells running out and in of the garbage cans. She faced the front once again continuing on her way she didn't want to be late for the test. But then again the whistling resumed. Evelyn stopped and spun around to see who was following her. She looked around carefully, knowing someone wanted her attention. Question was.. Who?

Levi sat behind a garbage bin chuckling to himself. After a few seconds he peeked out to see she had continued. Levi stood up and walked out.

With a sigh Evelyn stopped and waited for traffic to clear out. As she passed her fingers through her hair she felt someone loom over her from behind.

"Happy Birthday!"Came a voice she didn't know so well. She spun around and her face paled slightly. She was surprised he still remember her birthday. Evelyn looked away and muttered, "You were following me"

"Yep, I was."

"How do you remember my birthday?" Evelyn faced the street, rolling her eyes.

Levi peered down at her a smirk on his lips, "Best friends never forget each others birthdays."

"Well- I don't remember yours." Evelyn avoided his searching eyes.

"No? Guess it then." Levi raised his eyebrows.

"I don't know? August eight?" Evelyn said nonchalantly.

"That's funny, cuz your guess is more than right. That can only mean one thing... You still remember."

For a second Evelyn met his eyes. She was stuck and couldn't do anything about it but roll her eyes at him.

Levi stuck his hands deep in his pockets, "The road is clear, aren't you gonna cross?"

"There's a car coming and I'm not gonna think of killing myself." She spoke not caring if he heard.

"That car is like at the other side of the world... You're just scared to cross." He knew it so well, because when they were small kids Evelyn never crossed the streets alone. He would have to drag her across just to get to the park. She even cried sometimes.

"That's not true." She defended herself.

"So cross it" he raised an eyebrow. Evelyn stared at him hard.

"Or you need me to cross you?" He mocked.

Evelyn glared at him, she closed her eyes and calmed herself from bursting, "Levi, I'm not the little girl you know... Anymore"

"Oh really?" He looked down at her, licking his lips. She looked at him not knowing what to say.

The traffic light turned red.

"You can cross now." He told her, not taking his eyes off her. Evelyn didn't either.

"Can I walk you?" He asked.

"I guess so.." She sighed, looking down. "Just know I'm in no good mood" she started to cross, Levi at her side, who was pushing down a smile.

"It's your seventeenth birthday, how can you not be happy?"

Evelyn shrugged, stunned he also remembered her age so well. She sighed, "I know... But sometimes I just don't want to grow up."

Levi looked over at her, "I feel that way too... Sometimes."

Evelyn bit her lip, avoiding his eyes again, "And someone's also ruining my day."

"I'm guessing that's me?"

Evelyn looked at him.

"Fine then so make sure to call your boyfriend. I'm sure he'll cheer your nerves up- if he even remembers your birthday is today."

"What?" Evelyn couldn't help but smile.

"Don't play stupid with me... I saw everything" he told her in the face.

"Huh? What boyfriend?" She giggled out loud, sarcasm heard.

"That guy staying by you."

"Oh oh... He's my uncle."

Levi stared at her like if she'd just fallen from the moon, "You- You like your uncle?"

Evelyn nodded quickly with a grin, "He's everything!" She gushed.

Levi felt the back of his neck, hiding the jealousy from his voice. "Good luck- with that." He raised an eyebrow staring at her blankly, "Okay... I guess there's always a first time to every type of crush.. Uh-" he was confused.

"Levi?"

"Hmm?" Levi felt numb.

"Why are you so... Different?" She dared herself to ask.

Levi looked at her in the eyes for a long time, and without saying a word he turned around and left.
