2 Months Later
"I walk a lonely road, the only one I have ever known. Don't know where it goes but, it's only me and I walk alone."
I like to entertain myself by singing when I'm walking on deserted highway roads. I sing softly so, I can still hear my surroundings and be aware. My cane lightly taps the ground in front of me, showing me the debris that was scattered over the road and the bodies. I can hear the light groaning of the walkers as they stand and hear the shuffle of their feet as they near me. I let out a sigh of irritation and fold up my cane and take out my machetes. I traded my gun for them a day ago with a group of traveling survivors. They were sharp and light, letting me use them like I use my cane. I made quick work of the walking corpses and continued on my way.
Wherever that was.
I had originally planned to track down David and Kate and kill them but, thought of a better use of my time.
Find my sister.
The traveling survivors told me to stay on the main road I was on for 5 days and I would come to a big sign in the middle of a forked road. One way (the right way) would lead to North Carolina, where a safe zone was set up, and the other way (the left way) was Tennessee, where Mariana went to college. I had been walking for almost 2 days now and have been doing good.
Well, as good as a blind man can do in the middle of an apocalypse.
I also had the travelers to program my watch to beep when the sun would rise and when it would set. After all they had done for me, I had told them my name and story and they had told me their names and plan. The group consisted of two grown men, Tripp and Jesus, and two women, Elenor and Ava. They had told me they were going to the safe zone in North Carolina but, needed to pick up a friend before heading there. I wished them safe travels and made my leave. A smart person would've stayed with them and went to the safe zone but, I am not a smart man. I am only a blind one.
"We're going down, down in an earlier round. And sugar we're going down swinging. I'll be your number one with a bullet, a loaded god complex let's cock it and pull it."
Beep! Beep!
Time to stop for the night.
I didn't have a tent to set up or a tarp to put over my head. Just the clothes on my back and my backpack. I tap my cane around in search of a car that I could sleep in, it makes contact with something hard and I feel around. My hand reaches out and grasps the handle on the car. I slowly open the door and stop and listen. There are no groans or moans and I set my stuff inside and slide in. The interior is musty but, nothing too bad. I lay my cane beside me and let my shoulders relax and let out a sigh. I close my eyes and pray for dreams because that's the only place that I can see. My breathing becomes heavy and, before I know it, I'm asleep.
"Gabriel."
My head snaps up at the sound of my name and I look around. I'm in a field with green grass and the wind is slightly blowing, tussling my hair softly.
"Gabriel."
There it is again. That voice. I turn around and start sprinting through the field, in hopes to find the source of the voice. The sun is shining down onto my back as I search and I relish in the feel of it. My eyes dart back and forth but, come up empty upon seeing nothing but grass.
"Gabriel."
I whip around and find a sight that takes my breath away. A girl around my age is standing in front of me and looking right at me. She's wearing a tan long sleeved shirt with a red jacket around her waist and a pair of tight blue jeans on the bottom. Her curly dark hair is flattened down by a blue and white baseball cap. Her eyes are a light honey color and I freeze under her stare. She's beautiful.
"Who are you?"
The only response I got was a half smile. I step closer to her and she steps back. I frown at her movement and reach for her but, she steps back again.
"Not yet. We'll meet soon. Stay alive."
Beep! Beep!
I jolt awake at the sound of my watch and look around. Darkness is the only thing I see and rub my hand down my face before getting up. I exit the car and continue on my way with only one thought on my mind.
Who was that girl?
