".......is he awake?"
"I don't know, jab him again."
I felt a hand jab my ribs and wanted to hit the culprit. I moved slightly on the cushiony surface my back was on and groaned. My head was pounding like a bitch and I felt nauseous.
"Wait, I think he's getting up. Here, give me the flashlight."
A light was shined in my face and the beam of light was like a knife cutting through my corneas. I shut my eyes and waved a hand in front of it to block the damned thing.
"Can you get that fucking light out of my eyes!"
The light was shut off immediately and I sighed gratefully. There was whispers around me and they were doing nothing for my migraine.
"Hey, if you guys don't mind will you get me a glass of water and some aspirin?"
"Sure, Gabe."
My medicine and water was in my hands within seconds and I hurriedly choked them down and waited for them to kick in. The voices died down and I became curious as to who they belonged to. My nose wasn't cooperating and I couldn't smell hardly anything.
"Hey, who's all here?"
"Um, it's me, your uncle Javi. Clementine, Kate, and Carl."
I furrowed my eyebrows as I heard the last name but, forgot it as I remembered what happened. Well, some of what happened.
"What the fuck happened?"
I heard a shuffle of feet come up beside me and a comforting hand touch my head. Clementine.
"Well, Carl can explain it since he was the one actually there."
"Oh okay. Carl, what happened?"
I heard him clear his throat and speak in his southern drawl he got from his dad.
"Um, Ron lied about seeing the rabbit in the woods and attacked you with his bat. He got in two swings before I put a bullet between his eyes. I never did like that fucker and was waiting for him to fuck up. He was the last person in Alexandria and we thought he was the cause of all the dead bodies we found but, could never prove it. But, you passed out from the hits and I brought you back here myself."
I was shocked that Carl would do all that for me and even hauled me back to Alexandria.
"Oh, wow. Thank you, Carl. I owe you one."
I heard him click his tongue at me and start to walk away.
"Consider us even. Since the whole Richmond ordeal. Get well soon, you blind jackass."
I smile at the name and feel my aspirin kick in, letting the throb of my migraine fade away. I leaned into Clementine and felt myself start to drift off from her fingers sliding through my hair. I tried opening my eyes but, they still hurt from the room light so I closed them again.
"Well, me and Kate will see you guys tomorrow! Use protection and do what I would do."
"Shut up, Javi."
And with that, him and Kate left the room and shut out the bedroom light. I pulled Clem closer to me and pulled the blanket over us before letting sleep overcome me.
I woke up the next morning from the sounds of birds chirping. I groaned slightly at the noise and tried to go back to sleep but, found it useless. I slowly sat up in bed and stretched my limbs before cracking my eyes open. There was still a slight ache behind my eyes but, I brushed it off. I look around the room and seen the sunlight shining through my window and directly onto my bed. I glance back and see a goddess sleeping soundly next to me. I smile slightly and stand up to go to the restroom, needing to relieve myself.
I finish up and wash my hands and brush my teeth and look in the mirror. My eyes are bloodshot and have bags under them.
Wait. What. I can see? WHAT
I hurriedly rush back to Clementine and jump on top of her, waking her up in the process.
"Gabe, give me one good reason not to kick your fucking ass."
I can see her. Every curl of her hair, the color of her eyes, the expression on her beautiful face. I feel tears start to well up in the corner of my eyes and Clementine starts apologizing.
"I'm just kidding, Gabe! Don't cry, why are you crying?!"
I smile through my tears and look in her eyes.
"Clem, I can see. I can really see you."
She frowns for a moment before really looking at me and my eyes. A wide and beautiful smile stretches across her face and I can't help but to kiss her. I don't close my eyes because I'm afraid I'll wake up from this very realistic dream. I pull apart from Clementine and burrow my head in her shoulders.
"Clementine, please don't tell me I'm dreaming again. I don't think I could take it."
I feel a sharp pinch on my side and hiss at the pain.
"Son of a bitch! That hurt!"
Clementine looks almost sheepish as she gives me a smile.
"Well, you're not dreaming."
I kiss her one more time and go to pull her up and out of bed.
"Clem, come on! I wanna go see what everyone looks like."
I stand up with her but, immediately fall back down as a wave of nausea hits me. My eyes start throbbing and I clutch them in pain. Clementine quickly bolts out of the room and down the hall, probably to go find Eleanor and Javi. As I lay back down and glance outside one last time, I smile and send a quick prayer to anyone who's listening.
Thank you.
