Christmas day rolled around quite quick and Luna wasn't looking forward to it. Usually Luna is overjoyed because of all the traditions she did with her mom and dad. Excited to give gifts and to see peoples faces when they open the thoughtful gifts. But since the beginning of December, she really just did not want Christmas 2016 to happen. She wanted to skip to the new year and completely dismiss Christmas. No matter what Daniel, the boys, and even her Dad said, she was tough and wouldn't get into the spirit.
When she woke up to the smell of coffee, Luna instantly plopped back down and tried to fall back asleep. But she knew it would make her dad happy if sh got up and at least opened one present. So, in Luna fashion, she got up and slugged downstairs. No matter her situation, she was always the girl who would keep others happy. Never focusing on her own mental health but always others.
"Morning, Papa." She pressed a kiss to his stubbled cheek and grabbed the cup of coffee he was handing her. "I know you don't want Christmas this year, but there is just two presents I want you to open up and then we can go on like any normal day." Luna slowly nodded and headed into the living room where there was not even a slight hint that it was Christmas. Usually they go all out for his special holiday but due to there year they've had, they didn't bother to go up to the rafters to get there decorations. Rich handed her a small long box wrapped neatly. "This looks like mom wrapped it." Luna laughed a bit. She unwrapped the paper and saw a blue box. Once she lifted the lid, her eyes saw a beautiful simple gold necklace with a simple gold charm. Her mouth gaped open and she looked back up at her dad. "There's a note somewhere in there." She looked back down and found the little note. "Carry me wherever you go, Luna." She was a bit confused so she looked up. "The charm has your mothers ashes in them." Rich told her quietly. She started crying and went over to her dad and gave him a hug. "Now open this one. Before your mom passed she wanted you to have it and wanted to give it to you for Christmas." Her dad handed her a big box and Luna sat back down on the chair she was on. She unwrapped it and was again, met with a box. This time a big cardboard box. She stood up and opened the top. She pulled out a black guitar case, one that was oh so familiar. "No." Luna sped up the process and ripped the guitar out of the case. "Mama, gave me her guitar?"
Luna's mother has had the same guitar for as long as Luna could remember. She got it before Luna was even a thought in her mind. It was a simple light brown acoustic guitar with a strap that was handmade by Luna's late grandma. "Play something!" Her dad urged. She nodded her head and then placed her hand on the fret lines and then began strumming. It was a song her mom had composed herself that she then taught Luna.
Although Christmas was a bit lonely this year, her dad had made it 100x better. Because they were each others lifeline.
