Brother's Best Friend ~ Auston Matthews

Chapter 8

Mitch's POV
She looked so happy skating around with the boys. It's been awhile since she has been able to do this.

"Mitch, come on let's go!" I hear Auston scream. I look up to see everyone looking at me like I am crazy. Abby gives me a look knowing that I was thinking about her. I shake off my thoughts and joined the boys and Abby. She smiles and as she goes back to playing with the boys, we were soon interrupted by the alarm of Abby's Dexcom. She rolls her eyes and skates off the ice. I watch her walk into the locker room.

"Mitch, when did Abby get so good at hockey? I thought she didn't know how to skate?" I forgot that Abby didn't tell anyone about UND or playing hockey when she moved out here.

"That is for her to tell you. It's not my place." They all nod, Auston then asks,

"Did she play hockey when she was younger Mitch?"

"Guys I really can't tell you," I say starting to skate around again trying to shake my thoughts out of my mind. Abby comes back on the ice, and everyone stares at her.

"What's going on?" They all skate towards her. I give her a look. Willy speaks first,

"Abs, when did you get so good at hockey?" Abby's eyes widen as she realizes what's going on. She tries to escape but Auston is standing right by the door and catches her. She starts screaming and crying in Auston's arms. He looks alarmed not expecting her response.

"Auston let go of her," Matt says. Auston sets her back down on the ice and lets go of her. She skates backwards and sits down on the ice, still crying. I skate up to her and sit down next to her. I pull her close and whisper in her ear,

"Abby, I know this is hard for you, but I think it is time you stop hiding it because they can and will find out sooner or later." She sniffles and nods leaning into me.

"Alright boys gather around," Abby says quietly not lifting her head off my chest. She takes a deep breath, 

"well, Will I will start by answering your question. I played hockey when I was younger. I was really good. I always played on Mitch's team, and people used to tell me that I was better than him but I would never say that. So in high school, I played varsity hockey all 4 years and I was the best on my travel hockey team. I was the captain of both. I had scouts fighting over me trying to get them on there team. I even played with Canada's national team for a little, but in November of my senior year I was hit in the boards and I got a horrible concussion and I shattered my ankle and Achilles. My doctor told me that I could never play hockey again." They all look at her shocked even Auston who I would have thought she would've told. I did notice that she forgot the part about UND. I decided not to say anything because I know that this was hard for her to do. She looks at me and whispers,

"Can I go home please?" I nodded standing up and helping her up. I start to follow her off the ice, but Auston stops me,

"I will take her home, Mitch. Stay here" I nod, happy that he is taking her home I really just wanted to skate some more. I watch them head down the tunnel and turn to the boys who haven't moved.

"Wow," Is all Willy says. They all nod agreeing with him.

"Come on guys lets just play for a little longer than I need to make sure she's ok, but for now Auston's got it." We go back to what we were doing before.

Abby's POV
I head down the tunnel with Auston by my side. We take our skates off and head out of the ACC. When we are walking down the hallway to leave he stops us and turns towards me,

"Abs, why didn't you tell me?"

"Auston do you think that was easy? I have never told anyone that since I lived at home." He looks at me for a while then he kisses me. I am taken back a little but I deepen the kiss. I feel myself getting goosebumps. He pulls away and all he says is,

"Wow," I nod. After standing there for a little both of us taking in what just happened he grabs my hand, and we continue our walk towards his car. We get in the car and he started the drive back to Mitch and I's apartment. All the sudden my stomach growls really loudly Auston looks at me and laughs,

"Do you wanna go get food?" I nod. He pulls into the Mcdonald's parking lot. We go inside and order what we want. I get a ten piece chicken McNuggets and a milkshake. Auston doesn't get anything because Babs would kill him understandably. He brings me my food and we take a seat in the back of the restaurant and I dig in. After finishing up, we head out and Auston takes me home. He drops me off and I head up. As I'm in the elevator I think back to tonight. I played hockey for the first time, told my brother's teammates about my past, and kissed Auston. My eyes immediately widen, I kissed Auston shit. I take my phone out and text Steph,

Me
I did something but you have to promise NOT to tell Mitch.

Steph
Girly you can trust me. What did you do?

Me
Auston kissed me, and I kissed him back...

Steph
Damn girl, you get around.

Me
Steph that's not the fucking problem. I KISSED AUSTON

Girl, you are fine. Unless he makes a big deal about it you will be fine.

Ok, thanks, Steph. See you soon, ily.

I check the time to see that it is 11. Ugh, and I have an 8 am tomorrow. I plug my phone in and set my alarm. I get into my PJ's and hop into bed. Just before I fall asleep I hear Mitch walk into the apartment and head into his room.
