Read me to Sleep

Yo, Pinterest has got my back with ideas. (Update: no it don't)

I glanced at the alarm clock next to my bed, 1:47 a.m.

Now, you may be thinking, what could you possibly be doing at 1:47 in the morning that couldn't wait till later, reading. Reading is my favorite pass time for multiple reasons. The first and foremost reason being you can escape from your life, whether it be bad or good, and travel the world, or worlds, with characters that feel like friends to you. The second is my intense imagination has to be put to use somehow.

This particular night I was reading Daughter of Smoke and Bone, one of my favorite book series. I have read the 3 book series in less than a week, finish each 600+ page book in around 2 days. This week I'd decided to try and read each book in one day.

I was already pretty close to finishing the book when the person sleeping next to me started to wake up. Before you freak out, the person is my boyfriend, Nico Di Angelo. I was in the middle of an intense dialogue when I felt Nico kick me in his sleep. I really hoped he wasn't having a nightmare. He went still after a while, so I turned back to my book and was begging to relax when he snapped up.

His breath was coming in pants as he stared wildly around before his eyes came to rest on my concerned face. He sagged into my waiting arms, silent tears soaking his cheeks.

"Shhhh," I whispered, hugging him close to me and playing with his raven hair. I had many guesses about the subject of his nightmare, the main one being Tartarus. I make no claim about knowing any of the horrors of the literal worst place in anywhere, so that means that I don't know anything about comforting him. The best thing I've ever been able to do is just be present and ready for these types of things. It physically hurts me to think of all the times he's woken up in the dark without me, or anyone, beside him to hold him.

"(Y/N)?" Nico croaked. I looked down quickly to meet his puffy red eyes and smiled.

  "What?" I asked quietly.

"Can you read to me?" he asked quietly. I nodded and reached for the poetry book I kept on Nico's nightstand because I'm a nerd. Flipping to the first poem that I knew I liked I started reading.

When despair grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children's lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting for their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

(Peace of the Wild Things -Wendell Berry)

I glanced down at Nico, his dark head resting again my torso with a sleepy smile contrasting the tears drying on his face. I quickly flipped to another poem.

Where the mountains touch the sky,
Where poets DREAM, where eagles fly,
A secret place above the crowd,
Just beneath a silver-lined cloud.

Lift your eyes to a snowy peak,
And see the soon-to-be we seek.
Whisper DREAMS and let them rise,
To the mountains old and wise.

Climbers climb, it's time to try,
Where the mountains touch the sky.
Take me there. Oh take me now,
Someway, Someday, Somewhere, Somehow.

Where the ocean meets the sky,
Where mermaid dance, where seagulls fly,
A place in DREAMS I know so well,
The sea inside a single shell.

Whisper DREAMS and let them rise,
To the mountains old and wise.

(My dream: A Vision of Peace -TodMichael St. Peirre)

I looked down again just in time to see Nico's eyes drift shut and hear his breathing even out.

"Good night, ilo mio amore," I smiled and kissed his cheek. Flipping off the dim lamp I had had on, I snuggled down with Nico.

HI HI HI. I HAVEN'T UPDATED IN 3 YEARS AND THIS IS V MEDIOCRE AND HALF POERTY. SUE ME.
