William's POV (Agh first time!)
"That was seriously why you pulled me away from, Sage?" I ask trying to control my annoyance and anger. I clench my fists as the rest of my body tensed up. "To talk to delegates as a means to convince them to give you the throne of the North back?" This whole containing my anger idea is not going well. My voice rose and it feels like the vein is popping out the side of my neck.
We stand on the balcony in the ballroom, and I just found out King Thorance is trying to make a power play on a night I thought I wouldn't need to worry about such trying things. It's been decided that 3 months from now, the leaders of the four Regions along with the Capital City will meet to debate and vote on who would be deemed the capital of the Northern Region: Foreston, the current city, or Formosara, the original capital city before Margarethe made us disappear for two centuries.
Both cities have fair claims to the throne. Formosara was the original, which gives us a strong claim to the land. Foreston claims, however, that we lost our power before, and it could happen again. They also say that we are strangers to the present world which really is much different from two hundred years past, but honestly ruling over a group of people hasn't changed at all according to my father. You tell them what they want to hear, and the people love you even if your words are laced with lies. Any who see through your lies? Well, you make sure they don't become a problem. He says that power is worth having no matter what the cost, though I disagree with him completely on that from recent events.
Still, King Thorance Knightly will not relinquish his crown without a fight, and if this can't be done diplomatically, I fear he will cause a civil war in the North. That is why I try to help him so: to avoid pointless bloodshed. However, tonight was not a night I wanted to play the game of thrones.
The current standings for the meeting in 3 months are as follows. The votes from Westondell and Seaway, the Western and Southern Regions, are already guaranteed to be in our favor because their royal families hate the one of Foreston. Since we aren't technically a capital city, we have no vote but we can sit in on the meeting to debate. That's why my father just needs to secure the tie breaking vote against the other two regions, and he is using my engagement ball to do it. Honestly though, this may have hurt him in the long run because of one small problem: I'm too distracted to deal with this headache.
This entire time my father was trying to get me to talk with the delegates from Goldenrise, the Capital City, in an attempt to win their votes in our favor over Foreston, my mind was in other places. To be more precise, my thoughts were on another person: Sage.
They still are on her. What is she thinking of me right now? Is she scared of me? Does she despise me because of the confession I was about to make? There's no way of knowing. No, because my father just had to pull me away in the middle of our very important conversation that I couldn't finish. Many thoughts must be running through her head right now, none of them good. She seemed so understanding, but what if she is currently panicking right now? What if she's angry with me?
Hearing the frustration in my voice, my father inconspicuously pulls to a spot beside the railing of the balcony where no one currently is. Probably so no one can hear us bicker about it. His voice comes more hushed than me, "They are very important us, Will, and you might have blown our chances with them by the way you acted."
I can't help but laugh, "The way I acted?"
"You were so disinterested and distracted. It's like you didn't care if we retain our crown or not," he says harshly.
"That's because I was disinterested and distracted," I seethe. "Maybe Foreston is right. We lost the crown before so what's to stop us from losing it again? We obviously did something very wrong, you know? Maybe it's best for all if the crown is kept from you and your scheming ways."
