Chapter 8
I hike across the cabin area, my mind whirling with thoughts.
Oh, my gods, there was a prophecy about me. Of course! It’s almost as bad as Percy’s luck. Wait, no, scratch that. No one’s luck can possibly be as bad as Percy’s. I mean, falling into Tartarus! And defeating Gaea, which he probably did. I hope none of the Seven died. That would be—
I collide with something hard and fall backwards, landing butt-first on the cool green grass.
I look up, startled, and spot a boy lying on the ground in front of me.
We must have bumped into each other, I realize. I mentally scold myself for not paying attention, and I heave myself up to a standing position. I kneel beside the boy and ask, “Hey, are you okay?”
He turns around to face me—somehow he landed on his face—and I gasp. What? I can’t help it. Just because I’m not a girly-girl doesn’t mean that I can’t check out boys.
The boy has warm, chocolate brown eyes that make my heart melt instantly. His hair is dark brown, and it looks almost exactly like Percy’s hairstyle; windswept and carefree, the I-just-got-out-of-bed-and-I-look-awesome look. He has sharp and angelic-looking features, though the mischievous glint in his eyes tells me otherwise.
“A-are you okay?” I stammer. I try to snap out of my thoughts. I can’t like him! Besides, we only just met. He could be a jerk for all I know, like Hans from the movie Frozen. I smile to myself. I’ve always liked that movie, and now I like it even more; my powers are just like Elsa’s.
“Yeah, I’m fine.” A melodic voice snaps me out of my thoughts. Oh my gods, I think. And then: Stop it! Argh!
I look at the boy—you know what? I’m tired of calling him “the boy”.
“What’s your name?” I ask him. He stands up and flashes me a smile; his teeth are perfectly straight and blindingly white.
Apollo, I automatically think.
What he says next confirms my thoughts. “I’m Eric Atwater, son of Apollo. And you are?”
“Callie Devlin, daughter of, er, Hades,” I say uncertainly. To my relief, he doesn’t draw back or look disgusted. He only says, “Wow, Hades, huh? Yeah, I heard all that racket at the border.”
“Yeah,” I agree. “There were a couple hellhounds up there, but we handled them pretty well. It was a close call with Connor, though,” I shiver at the thought. Eric puts a comforting arm around my shoulder, and I can almost feel the sparks.
“I heard about that. You were a hero, saving him like that,” he says gently with a smile on his face. I blush from the compliment as well as his arm around my shoulders and mumble, “No, I didn’t do much, I only killed one hellhound. Or two…” I trail off. Eric laughs, and my heart flutters. “I know you did more than just that. Anyway, I have to go teach an archery lesson. See you later?”
The last part comes out as a question, and I respond eagerly, “Yeah! See you later!” And Eric waves and walks away.
I stare after him, watching his body sway from side to side. Then I blink and shake my head. Gods! I can’t like him; I just met him! And what about him? You can’t just forget about him, after just a year…
I push away the thought, and turn and set off for the black cabin that I know is the Hades Cabin.
When I finally reach it, I stop at the doorway and gaze up at the place that’s going to be my home for Zeus knows how long.
The entire cabin is made up of black bricks. The door is painted black, and the windows have black curtains covering them. Figures.
Two flickering Greek fire torches illuminate the doorway, and the occasional skull is embedded in the cabin walls. I shiver, and then square my shoulders and reach for the doorknob.
I open the door and walk in. I look around. It’s dark, and there’s no one there.
“Hello?” I call.
And then something barrels out of the shadows and knocks me over.
