Chapter 11

Nico and I reappear in the Hades Cabin, and he wrenches his arm out of my grip immediately.

“Sorry,” I apologize. Nico looks down at me (he’s tall—a few inches taller than me) in surprise. “What for?” he asks, tilting his head to the side. “Well, I know you don’t like to be touched,” I say, “Right?”

Nico frowns. “Well, yeah. How did you know that?” I sigh. Another person to explain everything to. Yippee. Note the sarcasm.

“Three words: Percy Jackson series,” I say shortly. Nico looks even more confused and starts to say something, but I cut him off. “I’ll explain more later. We should see if we were missed or not.”

With that, I march out of the Hades Cabin. Nico follows me, and we both stand there in shock.

        Camp Half-Blood is completely empty.

“Where is everyone?” I ask, dumbfounded. I don’t get it. How can over a hundred people just vanish into thin air?

“I don’t know,” Nico snaps. I huff. “That was a rhetorical question. I know you don’t know.” I pause. “Maybe they’re playing Capture-the-Flag?” I suggest. Nico shrugs. “Maybe,” he says doubtfully. “Let’s check the woods.”

We head over to the woods in an awkward silence. Sure enough, we soon spot a group of campers milling around by Zeus’ fist.

“Hey!” I call out. “What’s going on?” They all turn to look at me and gasp. “It’s her! Nico found her!”

       What?

“Wait!” The crowd falls silent. “What do you mean, Nico found me? I was never missing. He was with me the whole time!”

Immediately the crowd breaks out in shouting.

“What? So we were on a wild goose chase?”

       “That’s impossible!”

       “But Annabeth said—”

I try to hear what that camper said about Annabeth when all of the sudden a voice rings out above the rest.

“QUIET!” Almost immediately, the campers fall silent and turn to the source of the voice.

Annabeth, the person who shouted, is standing beside Percy; they both have their weapons drawn, and so do the rest of the campers. I quietly unsheathe my own dagger.

Annabeth spots Nico and I, and her face lights up. “Nico! You found her!”

Nico frowns. “Why does everyone keep saying that? We were in the Underworld.”

Percy steps forward, confused. “But Annabeth said that you were in your cabin, and you told her that Calypso” I glare at him and he corrects himself “Er, Callie, never came to your cabin. How were you in the Underworld?”

Nico’s eyes widen. “Oh, gods. Long story short, Callie told me that she was my sister, I sort of flipped out, we shadow travelled to Hades’ palace, and we came back and found camp pretty much deserted,” he explains quickly. “But do you realize what this means? The person you talked to in my cabin wasn’t me.”
