Chapter 4

I feel an exhilarating rush. Everything’s black. Well, duh, my eyes are closed, I think to myself, but I know that if I opened them it would still be dark. It’s cold, but that doesn’t bother me. I guess it’s the whole legacy-of-Boreas thing. Harsh voices whisper in my ear, and I tighten my grip on Hades’ hand

And then it’s over. My sneakers touch down on solid ground. I open my eyes, and I’m nearly blinded by the sun after all that darkness. I stagger and almost collapse, but Hades catches me.

“Careful,” he warns. “You must be exhausted after that. And you got to the right place on your first try!” He’s practically beaming with pride (A/N: I know Hades is a bit OOC, but oh well). He touches my forehead, and a rush of energy flows through me. I straighten up again.

A conch horn blows, and at the same time two boys run up to me. They look exactly alike, except one is slightly taller than the other. I grin.

“Hey, Connor and Travis Stoll, right?” I ask, pointing to each one as I said their name. They exchange confused glances. “Um, yeah. How did you know?” Travis speaks up. I pretend to grin evilly. “I have my ways.” They back up warily. “Are you a monster or something?” Connor asks. They unsheathe their swords.

“She is with me,” Hades booms. The Stolls’ eyes widen, and they bow hastily.

“Lord Hades!” They gasp in awe. Hades waves his hand dismissively. “Rise, rise. We need to get my daughter into camp.”

At the words “my daughter”, thunder rumbles ominously. I glance upwards nervously. Uh-oh. I forgot about the “no kids” pact the Big Three made. Zeus won’t be happy.

Hades glances up at the sky and seems to think the same thing.

“I must go,” he rumbles. “Before something happens. Look away, demigods.”

The Stolls and I avert our eyes, and Hades disappears in a flash of light.

Travis looks at me nervously. “Well, ah, daughter of Hades, huh? Welcome to Camp Half-Blood!”

He steps forward and gives me a friendly hug. I immediately think about what I’d read in the Percy Jackson books and feel for my dagger. Not surprisingly, it’s gone.

“Dagger,” I say simply, holding my hand out. Travis looks at me sheepishly. “How did you know?” he asks, handing it over. I smile and sheathe it. “I told you. I have my ways.”

Connor takes a step back. “Um, okay. But we need to get you into—”

And then a pack of hellhounds materializes out of nowhere and start racing towards us, snapping their teeth and drooling thick globs of spit.

“Campers, to arms!” a voice shouts. I start in surprise, and realize that a crowd of campers had gathered behind the borders at the call of the conch horn. They all charge at the hellhounds, yelling a battle cry. I hastily unsheathe my dagger and charge along with them. My first monster. Or rather, monsters.

A hellhound barrels toward me with its claws outstretched. I jump out of the way in the nick of time, but it still manages to rip my shirt sleeve off.

“Hey!” I yell. “I like this shirt!”

       I’m just weird that way.

I charge at the hellhound and flip over it just as it snaps at me, and I silently thank my mom for forcing me to take gymnastics.

I land on the hellhound’s back, and it starts to turn in circles trying to get me off. I stab it in its head, and it dissolves into yellow dust.

I look around and see that the rest of the hellhounds are gone except for one. That one hellhound is fighting Connor; Travis and the rest of the campers are trying to help, but the hellhound snaps at anyone who gets within five feet of it.

Suddenly, the hellhound raises its paw and swats at Connor. With a startled cry, Connor falls to the ground.

I watch in horror as the hellhound bares its teeth and wraps its jaws around Connor’s neck.
