Katniss P.O.V.
"Quit, Rye," Peeta says as he pulls Rye's hand away from my hair. The doctor is getting everything ready for us to see the baby, and Rye is getting very impatient.
"Sit him down here beside of me," I tell Peeta as I pat the bed. Peeta sits Rye down, and Rye curls up beside of me.
"Sit still," Peeta warns Rye. Rye just looks up at us and giggles.
"Alright," the doctor says as she wheels a machine over closer to the bed. "Let's see if we can find this baby's heartbeat."
My stomach clenches in fear, and Peeta bends down beside of me.
"This is the part where we get our miracle," he says softly near my ear. I give him a tight smile and nod my head.
The sudden feeling of cold gel on my stomach makes me flinch a bit, and the doctor gives me an apologetic look. When my eyes land on the grainy image, I almost burst into tears. The baby looks exactly like he or she did three days ago.
The doctor is silent for a long time, and I notice a look of deep concentration on her face. After a while, it all has me feeling pretty unnerved.
I hear Rye saying my name and feel him tugging at my hair, but I feel frozen in place. I hear Peeta telling Rye to stop, but it feels like I'm a million miles away.
Finally, I can't take it any longer.
"Is something wrong?" I ask. The doctor turns to look at me, and she smiles a bit.
"No, actually. But I did find something... unusual."
My heart drops.
"What's going on?" Peeta asks anxiously.
"Well, either the machine did glitch the last time you were here, or you're definitely getting that miracle."
All of the fear leaves me for the moment.
"So you found the heartbeat?" I ask hopefully.
The doctor smiles widely at us. "Mrs. Mellark, not only have I found the baby's very strong heartbeat, but I've also found a second heartbeat."
And just like that, the fear's back.
"E-Excuse me?" I say. I hear the words, but I don't believe it.
"Congratulations," the doctor says. "You're having twins."
I look over at Peeta to see him staring intently at the screen. His mouth is gaped open, and he looks like he might pass out.
"Peeta," I say cautiously, not really knowing what all is going on in his head.
He looks at me with tears sparkling in his blue eyes, and he slowly shakes his head.
"It's amazing how quickly you can fall in love with someone," he says in a chocked up voice. Peeta carefully places his hand on the side of my stomach. "Katniss, there's two babies in here. You... That's..."
Peeta is completely awestruck.
I look down at where Peeta's hand rests on my belly, and I don't even notice him leaning in. Peeta completely catches me off guard when he quickly presses his lips to mine.
Gosh, I've missed this feeling.
I just stare at Peeta for a moment as he looks back up at the screen.
"How come it doesn't look like there's two babies?" Peeta asks the doctor.
"Sometimes one baby can sort of hide behind the other, making it hard to see them. But I'm sure by your next appointment that both babies will be visible."
