Black. What a boring color to be stuck with. Of all the colors in all the world, the only thing you can see are shades of black, because your stupid soulmate couldn't be bothered to be born with say, blue eyes, or green, or even brown. You've heard some people jabber on about the beauty of the blue sky or the way the green grass ripples in a breeze or the way the leaves change color in fall, but all you get is a kaleidoscope of greytone.
As a traveler, you've seen quite a many places. None were too impressive, but maybe that was just because of your bland outlook on life at the moment.
Presently, you were walking through the front gates of the Village Hidden in the Leaves. Or Konohagakure, as it was also called. You'd been to Konoha once before, but it hadn't been a long stay. It was fairly obvious that your soulmate wasn't here and so you didn't want to waste time hanging about. But a storm we coming by and you didn't want to be caught in it, so back to Konoha you went.
As you walked through the unfamiliar streets a half-remembered voice reached you and you turned to see a boy with pale grey hair and paler grey eyes. "Hey! (Y/N)! What are you doin' back so soon?"
"Ah... Naruto." I waited for him to catch up to me and we continued side by side. The boy never stopped talking. You tuned out most of his words, only occasionally responding, scanning the crowd for any particularly dark-eyed men (or women, you would take either at this point) that you had missed the first time, but none stood out.
"Whatcha looking for?" Naruto nudged you, the touch surprisingly gentle in comparison to his normally rough actions.
"Soulmate," you muttered without thinking. Immediately you felt your face flush and you glanced at him, waiting for him to laugh.
But he didn't laugh. Instead he gave you a long, thoughtful look and said, "What color can you see?"
"Black..."
He nodded rapidly, lower lip caught between his teeth. "Alright. Alright, alright, I got this. I know a few people, let's go."
You squeaked in surprised as the pale-haired boy took your hand and started to drag you off. "Go? Go where?"
"To see people, obviously! If we're gunna get you your man, we gotta work for it!"
He continued to drag you and you followed behind, half-reluctant.
~~~
"Darn, I was sure that would be it." Naruto tugged at your sleeve, which he had a firm grip on, to get you to walk faster. "Oh well. If it's not Shikamaru, then that leaves one person who's in your age range.""And who is he?" You looked at Naruto curiously, wondering how he felt about this last one.
"He's... Well, his name is Lee and that's about all I can think to say other than he is crazy strong. A little weird, yeah, but hella determined."
"Oh?" What a singularly unflattering description.
"Yeah. Should be just about... There he is." Naruto pointed to a boy with hair black as oil that was done into a bowl cut. He was wearing a dark grey skintight suit with one of those ninja jacket things that a lot of the people seemed to have in Konoha. He was standing under a tree, holding a small flower in his hand. Upon closer inspection, you realized that his arms were almost entirely bandaged and you wondered what had happened to him.
"Go on." Naruto pushed you forward and you staggered a few steps, glancing back at him worriedly.
What do you see? you thought suddenly. How do I look in your eyes?
Swallowing a lump in your throat, you walked towards the boy with the flower. He realized you were there when you were close enough to look into his eyes, but for some reason you couldn't seem to lift your head. Staring at your shoes, you walked until you were close and said quietly, "Hello."
"Hello! I am Rock Lee! AND HELLO TO YOU TOO, NARUTO!"
"YOOOO!" Naruto called back.
You couldn't help but let out a short giggle, putting a hand over your mouth in an attempt to stifle it.
"So... Can I help you with something?"
Ah. Yes. The question. "Naruto said your eyes were black...?"
"I assume they are. I can only see (E/C), so I do not know for sure, but people have told me."
(E/C). Your mother had always said that you had the prettiest (E/C) eyes she'd ever seen. You took a deep breath and raised your head.
Huh. His eyes really are black.
He seemed... Surprised, when your eyes met and he slowly raised a hand to touch your face. His cheeks tinged with blush- what did they call that color again?- and he said, "I think you may be the most beautiful woman I have ever seen."
You laughed and grabbed his hand. "Do you know how many times I've cursed you for those darned black eyes?" Lee blinked and gave a small shake of his head. "A lot. Now come on," you knit your fingers together and gently started to tug him away. "I think we have some catching up to do."
Naruto was hopping excitedly from foot to foot, close to bursting with excitement as the two of you drew near. "Did it work?" His eyes were glowing, a bright- you glanced at the sky you'd heard so much about- blue.
Lee grinned and punched Naruto lightly on the shoulder. "When I told you I'd pay to find my soulmate, I was joking."
Naruto laughed, continuing to frolic around you and Lee, telling everyone who would listen that he found Lee his soulmate. "Look what I did!" he cried. "I did a good thing!"
You looked around, momentarily overwhelmed by this onslaught of 'color' when you'd only ever lived in a world of monotony. Feeling a flicker of panic, you looked to Lee, desperately seeking solace in the familiar. He was looking at you too. His eyes were the deepest black you'd ever seen, like pools of night, and your heart slowed.
He squeezed your hand gently and smiled. "It is too much, right?"
You nodded dumbly, captivated by the kindness in his face. He was thick-browed and baby faced, but you suppose that as far as a predetermined mate, you could have done far, far worse. Naruto dashed around you once more, as though the cosmos agreed with your sentiments and decided to put an alternative in view to show what you could have been stuck with instead.
Taking a half step forward, you hugged Lee and he gave a "Yeep!" of surprise before returning the embrace. He was warm.
-two years later-
You woke up and decided that 'awake' was not a state of being you agreed with. Grumbling, you rolled over and buried your face in Lee's chest, earning a sleepy laugh from him. "Good morning.""You've got the morning part right," you grumbled, looking up enough to see his face. He smiled at you and gently brushed your hair back from your face.
"I love you, (Y/N)."
You smiled back at him. "I love you too, Lee." Looking into his dark eyes you wondered how you'd ever seen anything but beauty in the color black.
