When a person is born, only one of their eyes is theirs. Everyone knows this. The other is your soulmate's. Though, sometimes a person will share their soulmate's eye color and that can lead to some... Difficult times for some who think their destiny is to be alone.

You do not have this problem. Your left eye is yours and it is just (E/C). But your right eye is the most beautiful shade of violet. You've never seen anyone with the color and you've constantly been told how pretty and unusual your soulmate's eyes are. You don't know who they are, obviously, but you're always looking.

Today, you get to see many people and continue your search as you go to a 'Beyblade tournament' of some kind with your cousin, Shu. He's actually your third cousin, but what's the point in telling anyone that? You yourself aren't a player of the game Beyblade- don't they call themselves Bladers or something? -but you still came to cheer on your cuz'.

You were in the crowd, mismatched eyes narrowed, in search of the mystery man (or woman!) that was supposedly your perfect match. Brown, blue, black, green, and holy smokes, that boy's got orange! But no purple. The only purple-ish eyes you'd found belonged to a sweet nonbinary, but their other eye was chocolate brown so you'd moved on.

You searched and talked and ignored a lot of the tournament, not particularly interested in watching two people intensely stare at fancy spinning tops until one fell or exploded. But then a name was announced that sent a ripple through the crowd big enough to turn your head.

"Next up! Shu Kurenai versus Lui Shirasagi!"

Your cousin (hey cuz!!!) walked out, head high, and you waved frantically. You saw him glance at you and fight a smile. Yaaas boi, ya girl here for ya.

And then the other boy walked into view.

The crowd fell silent as he walked slowly forward, eyes shut like he'd walked this path a thousand times. The thick fur- or was it feathers? -lining his coat shifted lightly with his body and his blue hair was like fire. He stopped precisely where he needed to. Then he opened his eyes and you found yourself staring at your own iris in the face of another human being.

For a second you couldn't believe it- after all this time, you found him here?- but then he turned his head ever so slightly and you saw his left eye, that most beautiful violet that you loved so, so much. The look of pure horror on Shu's face confused you.

"You?!" Your cousin pointed an accusing finger at this Lui boy. "No. No! I won't let it be you!"

The calm gentleness that had thus far adorned Lui's features vanished and he took an expression of cruel amusement. "I don't know what you're talking about, Kurenai, but I think I'll do it for spite."

Then Shu stepped up onto the raised edge of the Beyblade stadium and launched himself at Lui, clearing the battle space and landing in front of the other boy. He grabbed him by his fluffy coat, red/green eyes furious, before the announcer grabbed him and pulled him back. "Kurenai, if you attack another player you forfeit the match."

Shu's face was twisted in a snarl, hair in a position so that the scar he'd had since before you knew him was on display. For a second you were worried that he'd still try to attack your soulmate. But then he shrugged himself free and took up his position once more. "I won't let you have her, Lui."

Lui's face blanked in confusion. "What?" Shu didn't answer. "Um... Really, what? You can't just say something like that and clam up, Kurenai!" Your cousin kept his silence. Then Lui squared his shoulders and shut his right eye- your eye. "Wait, you said her. Do you know who's eye this is?"

"Just battle me, Lui." Shu readied himself. "You win, I'll tell. You lose, you leave and you never come near me or her again."

Lui's eyes, yours and his, flicked over the crowd, but you knew he'd never spot you, even if you screamed and flailed, because a lot of others were screaming and flailing too and you'd just be another in the crowd. "Alright. Get ready to talk, Kurenai." He raised his Beyblade-shooty-thingie that you didn't know the name of. "Get ready to talk."
