"My name is Riley Hunter. I'm the newest member of Alpha Team."
Chris Redfield, my new captain, placed a comforting hand on my shoulder as the rest of Alpha Team welcomed me. I received a few uncomfortable stares and some were clapping awkwardly. I heard that the team knew about a new member joining and that my name was circulating around. Guess they never expected a woman.
"Listen up, Alpha Team. I want you to look out for Riley as much as you look out for each other. Even though she's a new addition to the team, I want you guys to treat her like family. Ultimately, we're one unit."
Alpha Team responded with a resounding 'yes, sir!'. Chris instructed me to go and mingle with the other soldiers to get to know them better. He soon left and I turned to face the rest. I didn't particularly like to mix around with strangers, but if I wanted to find out who the traitor was, I needed to know everyone in the team, and that meant building trust in one another. Like what Chris said, I was now part of the team and I needed to work with them and look out for them. I decided to suck it up and stick with the plan.
"I'm your lieutenant Piers Nivans," the first of them spoke.
I greeted him politely. He looked cute, but I was on a professional mission so I kept that thought aside. The rest chirped their names and once I got to know them a little better, they didn't seem too bad. A few others, however, begrudgingly greeted me or completely ignored me altogether.
"How did you even enter the BSAA? Not to mention Alpha Team," someone said aloud from the back. "Alpha Team is only for the best of the best."
"Brett," Piers warned, but he didn't listen.
Brett, who had placed his foot on the table, removed them and stood up. He casually smoked his cigarette as he strode towards me with a dirty look in his eyes. He was about seven inches taller and way bigger than me, but I was sure that if I strike first, he'd be on the floor and crying in pain. He huffed cigarette smoke in my face.
"Back off, Brett," Marco said next, trying to hold him back but he easily pushed him off.
"Relax, I'm not going to do anything to a pretty face. And I'm pretty sure she won't do anything," Brett said in his cocky voice, tossing his unfinished cigarette away. "Or rather, she can't do anything."
I remembered Leon making me promise not to be sassy towards my captain, but he didn't say about the others. I went ahead with my usual attitude to put him in his place. "Oh really? Why don't you come nearer so you'll know what I can do to your pretty face and whether I'm the best of the best."
He smirked, moving closer like I told him to. Good dog. I heard Piers trying to call us off but sorry, Lieutenant, not this time. Brett went with a strong hook right at me, but I stepped back, avoiding it completely. At this point, I heard some of them yelling at Brett to stop and Piers was rushing to pull Brett away. Brett, however, ran straight towards me to give me a kick to the ribs, but I blocked it off with my arm. When I didn't move from my position after receiving the impact, the rest of Alpha Team stared in shock and awe. I smiled, knowing that they've probably never seen a solid defence. I pushed his leg away and I went with a high kick to his face. His head got knocked back hard and when he looked at me again, his nose was all bloody. He tried to restrain my arm, but he was too slow. I executed a head scissors takedown and he fell back right into his seat.
"Too much for you, Brett?" I taunted, flipping my hair.
The rest of Alpha Team chanted my name while some attended to Brett. Piers looked at me and gave a small smile. "I'm sure you guys know that Riley deserves to be here," Piers announced and they clapped and cheered.
Suddenly, the door to the lounge room opened and everyone went quiet. It was Chris, demanding to know what happened and why there was a huge ruckus. Piers seemed at a loss of words, so I covered up for him.
"Oh no, it's nothing, Captain. You see, Brett here suddenly had a nosebleed while introducing himself," I explained, smiling innocently at Chris.
Chris who was still confused looked past me and Piers. Brett, now holding a bloody tissue, simply held a shaky thumbs-up. Chris shrugged it off and told the rest of Alpha Team to clean up the mess. He asked me to follow him so that he could show me where my bed and showers were. Chris said that as captain, it was his main priority to take care of his soldiers, and that's why I was given a separate room and shower. Technically, I only had a room to myself. As for the showers, I had to use the one in Chris' room since he was using the captain's quarters.
"If you need anything, my room is right across yours, so don't hesitate to ask me for any help. Of course, if you need the showers, you'll only be allowed to after I had mine."
"Of course, Captain. Thank you."
"Great. I'll see you bright and early for tomorrow's training. Just for tonight, I'll let you use the showers first, so go on ahead."
I was glad for Chris' hospitality. Having a room to myself made it easier to contact Hunnigan to give Adam my report every night without anyone getting suspicious. Of course, I'd make a habit to check for any devices in the room, in case there were any. I couldn't let my guard down at any point in time. I was lying on the bed as I contacted Hunnigan, who then connected me to Adam straight away. The screen on my phone went dark for a moment before Adam appeared, with Leon alongside him.
"Riley. It's nice to see you after two months. Is everything alright?" Adam asked.
"Yes, everything's okay. You don't have to worry," I replied.
"So, did my girl do anything on her first day on the Alpha Team?" Leon asked, seemingly hinting at something.
"Other than beat the hell up out of one of my teammates, that's pretty much it."
Adam and Leon looked at each other in shock, but Leon was the first to laugh. I knew it, I heard him say and Adam joined in laughing. I filled them in on what happened during my BSAA training and they congratulated me for being top of the cohort. Adam said he expected nothing less from me and that he was glad that I was able to tough it all out. Being a woman in the BSAA was certainly not easy, but now that I was finally in the Alpha Team, I had nothing to worry about. The only thing I needed to focus on was to find the traitor. I hadn't found out anything about anyone, but now that I knew their names and faces, it would only be a matter of time before I took him out.
"We believe in you, Riley. Keep up the good work," Adam spoke, before ending the call.
