I landed on my back with a thud. I felt like my bones were broken and shattered, but I had to keep on fighting. Chris was still defending himself against Richards, but it looked as though Chris was going to lose at any moment. The empty syringe had been thrown out of my hands the moment Amara got back up on her feet. I tried to fight her off, but I couldn't hold her down without hurting her. Amara was now hovering above me. She got to her knees and brought both her hands around my neck again. I couldn't breathe, but I needed to talk to her. I needed to get to her.
"A-Amara, stop this. You don't need to l-listen t-to Richards!" I choked out, but her grip around my neck only got tighter. "A-Amara! Please don't do t-this. You saved C-Chris and y-you saved me. You s-saved J-Jake and Leon, but if you d-don't s-stop, you'll let R-Richards win!"
Her grip loosened, and I took in deep sharp breaths. Her eyes slowly started to change back to her original blue, and I knew it had to be working. Just then, her grip got tighter again, and I could feel my lungs burning.
"Amara! P-please. You h-have t-to f-fig-"
I couldn't continue talking. I could feel myself slipping into the darkness. Just before my eyes closed, I was relieved of pressure on my neck. I readjusted my eyesight, finally focusing on Amara right in front of me. She rested her forehead on my chest as her hands held onto my shoulders gently.
"A-Amara?" I breathed out, and she nodded slowly.
"Listen to me, Piers," she whispered into my ears. "I don't know how long I can fight this virus, but while I still have my conscious, we'll kill Richards."
"How, Amara?"
"There are syringes in the cabinet, just beside the operation table. Throw me there and once I get those, we'll both rush to Richards."
We executed the plan without Richards knowing. We waited for the perfect moment to catch Richards off guard. As soon as Chris was pushed back, I ran straight at him, but he dodged. Amara went up beside him and stabbed it in his neck.
"Impossible!" he screeched, pulling the syringe out. "You should be obeying me!"
"Maybe you shouldn't have injected me with the memory vial, because I just remembered how to kill you," Amara spoke.
"It's over, Richards," Chris said, pulling out his pistol while I took out my shotgun.
Chris nodded at me. I shot him at point-blank range without hesitation. Blood splattered all over then I realised what I had done.
"NO!" I screamed, dropping my shotgun and rushing towards Amara.
She had run right in front of Richards to protect him. The virus had regained her conscious for that short moment. Amara breathed heavily in my arms, and her eyes started to dull and fade into a pale blue. I tried to put pressure on her wound, but it was too late. The wound didn't heal.
"Amara, baby, no... Stay with me," I cried out, tears already falling.
She shushed me. Her weak hand reached out to wipe off the tears on my cheeks. I tried to tell her to stay awake, and that I didn't know what I'll do without her. No words left my mouth.
"I know..." she coughed out. She gave me a small smile as she said, "Stay strong, Piers and keep fighting. I love..."
She eyes fluttered close, and her body went limp. I cried as I held her near to me. Chris' hand was on my shoulder, pulling me back. I saw Richards back on his feet, cracking his neck. I laid Amara next to the operation table then grabbed my bloody shotgun.
"The damn A-Virus failed even though I had such high hopes on Amara. It doesn't matter anymore. Haos will still reign and you two will be dead," Richards stated.
"You'll pay for this!" I growled.
I wanted to run ahead and shoot him right in the head. Chris grabbed a hold of me, shaking his head. I was going to shake him off when I realised I was doing the exact same thing Chris was when he wanted Ada dead more than ever. I nodded, taking a deep breath.
"Distract him. I'll do the rest," Chris instructed.
I secretly gave Chris the other syringe before going on a hand-to-hand combat with Richards. I didn't use my shotgun so that I wouldn't make the mistake of shooting Chris. Richards was much slower in his movements, and I managed to land in a few punches here and there. From the corner of my eye, I saw Chris giving the signal. I landed a straight jab in his face before putting him in a headlock. Chris ran up to us and gave another dose of whatever virus he was consuming. I let go of him and he crumpled to the ground, clutching his head. His veins turned bright blue, almost electrifying. Suddenly, something jutted out from his back and his arm began to grow bigger. Chris immediately ran back to my side and told me to get my gun ready.
"CHRIIIS!" Richards bellowed in a monstrous voice. His frame was now at least two times bigger than ours. "You'll pay for this! You'll both die here!"
His arm swung above our heads just as we avoided it. We dodged all his attacks, trying to get out of his reach before we attacked him. His was big, but his movements were getting slower. Chris landed a direct shot to his arm, causing him to stop in pain. I hurriedly threw a grenade right into his mouth. Chris pushed me behind the operation table to take cover. The grenade exploded, and Richards writhed in pain. We heard his body fall to the ground before we got out of cover. His head was blown off, and a pool of dark red blood quickly formed underneath. I sneered at him, kicking at his body just to make sure.
"Stay dead, you son of a bitch," I spat out before turning away from him.
I went back to Amara, touching her cold cheeks. I whispered a soft prayer and an apology. Chris soon came next to me.
"I'm so sorry, Piers."
I shook my head quietly. "I should've been here for her. But it's over now, Chris," I said, carrying her into my arms before standing up. I took one long look at her before facing Chris. "Let's get the hell out of here."
"Okay," he agreed, picking up his guns.
