SORRY
My eyes slowly opened as I woke up in a somewhat unfamiliar bedroom. I reassured my self that I fell asleep on the recliner in the living room, but I guess Pony carried me in here before anyone could disrupt my slumber. I pushed the warm sheets off of my body and sat at the edge of the bed, slowly placing my bare feet on the icy hardwood flooring and hobbling into the hallway. I was not fully awake yet until I stopped in the door way of kitchen. My eyes were fixed on Dally who was leaning against the icebox exchanging laughs with Pony and Johnny. Before I knew it he noticed me standing there and his laugh began to fade into a defining silence.I walked in and nudged him aside, "excuse me," I say in a low tone. It was hard for me to allow this to go on. He looked at me harshly. But there was also something about this look that I've seen before. I believe this look was exchanged with Sylvia one time or another. The fact that it had discovered me was not only a incredible play on the chess board, but a treat for me to enjoy until one of us hits checkmate.
"Hey, I'll see you two tonight." I heard him say as he pumped into Pony on accident. He ignored me like I was a stray dog passing him by on the street. The two boys nodded and Dally walked out the door. I bit my bottom lip before coming to the conclusion that the right thing to do would be apologizing. I let out a huff as I loped after him.
"Dally," I said as he opened up the gate to leave the Curtis' property. He ignored me once more and walked out. I became infuriated before yelling, "Dallas!"
His body lazily turned around and looked at me, "what do you want?"
"To apologize," I stood my ground. This was not going to be held over my head forever. "I'm sorry."
He shuts the gate and hangs over it. His eyes roll at the sound of my voice. "Do you expect me to forgive you?" It seemed to me as though I was wasting not only his time, but my own.
"You know what, forget it. I can't make you forgive me and there's no sense in trying." I say truthfully. I couldn't make him forgive me for what I did. He nods with a little smile.
"Alright then," he unhinges himself from the gate and walks away. I knew he was going to turn my apology over in his mind. That's the way he and I were before coming to a final decision.
"That sounded like it went well," I rolled my eyes at Johnny's statement.
"Shut your trap, Johnny Cade," I walked back into the kitchen. The smell of pancakes filled my nose as I sat down at the table. My appetite flared up at the wonderful smell. I rested my elbows on the table before landing my jaw in he palms of my hands. I let out a sigh before narrowing my eyes. My thoughts consumed me.
***
Night time rolled around and the only ones in the house were Darry and I.
"Harley?" Darry placed the paper down on the table, I hummed letting him know I was listening. "How're you and Dally?"
I shrugged before shaking my head slowly, "fine."
"You two are so much alike," he gets up and pours himself a cup of coffee and then sits back down next to me. I looked at him confused. "He'll come around," he says while enduring a sip of his coffee. I sighed at the thought of it.
"How come you didn't go to the Nightly Double?" He asked setting his mug down on the table and picking his paper back up. Covering me as if I wasn't there.
"D'ya really think Dally would've invited me to go with them?" I place my elbow on the table and rest my chin in the palm of my hand. Darry set his paper down and thought it over. He cocked his head and nodded as it ran though his head.
"Makes sense," I agreed with his response, but he still added a bit of his two cents. "He can't ignore you forever. Trust me I've tried to ignore Ponyboy for a week." He chuckled and crossed his arms while leaning back in his chair. I looked at him, curious.
"Do you hate Ponyboy, Darry?" He shook his head at me like I was a businessman offering him a product.
"No," he looks at me honestly. "He just has to learn how to use his head." I flutter my eyes in satisfaction.
"Hey guys!" A chipper voice breaks the conversation between Darry and I.
"Hey Soda," Darry greets with with the picking up of the newspaper and flicking it out to get a better view.
Soda walks to the bedroom before coming back concerned, "hey Darry, where's Pony?"
Darry looked at the time to see that it was 1 o'clock in the morning. Darry shrugs his broad shoulders before looking back at the paper. I got up from the table and went to coach to fall asleep.
An hour or so later I was woken up by the three brothers howling at each other for whatever reason.
"'I don't mean too, I forgot'. That's all I ever hear from you!" I heard Darry yell, I rolled over to see what was going on and before I know it the figure of a boy shuddered on the floor. "Ponyboy.." Darry took a step towards him, "I didn't mean to-," but before Darry could finish Ponyboy sprinted out the door and was on his way to who knows where. My heart fell to the pit of my stomach. I propped myself up with my arm and looked at the two panicked older brothers. Darry noticed I was up, "Harley, I-I'm sorry."
"Darry," I shook my head slowly at what he had done.
"I didn't mean too," he ran his hands through his hair worriedly. he began to pace back and forth. He has remembered the discussion we had earlier before looking at me. All color drained from his face. He finally understood why Pony thinks of him the way he does.
Soda tried to calm Darry down, "He'll be back by morning, Darry." Soda looked calm but I knew on the inside he was just as worried as Darry was, maybe even more. He patted Darry on the shoulder before leading him off to bed
I lied awake all night with Ponyboy running through my mind. My sleep pattern was destroyed by the image of the shuddering boy on the floor. My eyes danced around the ceiling of the house before growing heavy. I resisted for as long as I could before dozing off into a deep sleep.
