Everyone stopped and stared as Rey made her way through the Resistance base. People had been fascinated by her new weapon ever since she returned from her journey with it. Finn had been bugging her for days to let him practice with it, but given his record with melee fighting, Rey was reluctant to hand over her new saber. She rigged a strap and walked to her training grounds with her pike on her back.
Far away enough from the base to give her privacy, but close enough so that she could see if there was trouble, Poe had helped her set up training grounds as soon as she arrived at base with a weapon. While he preferred to do his fighting with a blaster, he served as an opponent for her training. They'd also rigged several dummies for her to test moves on when he was busy.
When Rey reached the clearing beyond a patch of trees, she let out a long sigh and felt her muscles relax. She struggled to be herself around the members of the Resistance; so much was expected out of her. But out here, she was free to let out all of her stress and anxieties. It was just her and her saber. Her lips curled into a smile. And now Ben.
She pulled her pike off her back as she walked towards him.
He raised an eyebrow. "How's your new weapon serving you?"
"Good," Rey said, resting it against a dummy and stretching out her arms.
"Go on then." Ben nodded. "Show me what you learned."
Rey laughed as she picked her weapon back up. "You want to watch me train? What if I learned a secret technique that will allow me win every duel? You can't know very secret."
Ben smirked. "You know we can't keep secrets from each other."
"Unfortunately," Rey muttered.
She started going through her drills, slowly at first as a warm up. But as she got more and more into it, she sped up slashing and cutting through the dummies in front of her in a hurried frenzy. Out of breath, she stopped once she realized she'd destroyed the last one. She leaned against her staff as Ben looked at her appraisingly.
"I can only imagine how much havoc you just wrecked on your surroundings."
"Thanks." Rey smiled. "I think."
"How does it hold up against an actual opponent, though?"
Rey shrugged. "Poe's the only opponent I've got other than these dummies, and he does his best fighting in an x-wing."
Ben stepped towards her. "You do have me."
Rey raised an eyebrow. "You want fight?"
"I could use the practice." He unhooked his lightsaber from his belt and looked to her with a gleam in his eyes. "Shall we?"
Rey ignited her saber again and gave it a twirl. "Show me what you got, Solo."
He ignited her own blade as they began to circle each other. "We're on a last name basis now?"
"It seemed fitting in the moment." She rushed towards him, and he raised his blade to block.
He deflected the blow and stepped back. "It hardly seems fair as you don't have a last name."
He swung his saber, and they were at it. The area was a flurry of green and red light as they each strove to get the upper hand. Through their connection, though, they were each always able to know exactly what the other was going to do. There was no time to words as they each remained out of breath, constantly attacking or blocking.
Their duel could've gone on for hours had Ben not reached out a hand and forced Rey still.
She grunted. "That's cheating."
