Chicago, Illinois, 1997
Today was Colin's first day at Prospect High School in Chicago. He and his family had moved there from Ireland - Drogheda to be exact - last week. Everything was still kind of overwhelming since Drogheda is such a small town where everybody knows everybody and Chicago is the exact opposite. He had always been kind of an outcast but at least he didn't have to leave any friends behind back in Ireland. His older brother, Allen, seemed to be having a hard time leaving his friends behind.
'Good luck my boy!' Colin's mom smiled before she drove away.
He took a deep breathe and looked up at the building in front of him. It looked at least ten times bigger than his old school.Only a few more months. She thought to herself.
Jennifer was making her way towards the head entrance when she saw this dark haired guy. She'd never seem him before and he looked kinda lost. She decided to help the guy.
Jennifer didn't really have any close friends. People used to make fun of her because of that but she ignored it and they stopped eventually.Treat people with kindness. Especially the people that are not kind to you.
That's something Jennifer lived by.
'Excuse me,' she said. 'Can I help you?'
The dark haired guy turned around looking startled.
'You looked kinda lost,' She chuckled.
That's when she notices his eyes.
Damn they were blue.
'Uh thanks,' he answers scratching behind his ear awkwardly. 'I ehm- I'm new.' He smiles.
'What year are you in?' Jennifer asks with a smile of her own.
She already liked him. He wasn't one of those people. He wasn't arrogant or anything.
'I'm a a Junior, love.'
'You're British.' She was going to ask but it came out more like a statement.
'Irish.' He chuckled. 'Common mistake.'
'Right,' She smiles. 'Anyway I'm Jennifer.' She says holding out her hand for him to shake.
When he hesitates she starts doubting herself. Maybe young people don't shake hands. Jennifer had an old soul. At least what her mom always told her.
Before she can think more of it he takes her hand and shakes it.
'Colin.' He smiles. 'Pleasure to meet you.'
'Well Colin where do you need to go?' She asks before walking towards the head entrance. He follows her.
'Ehm...' He grabs a crumbled piece of paper out of his backpack. 'I- I'm sorry how do you read this thing?'
She takes it from him and laughs.
'You've got it upside down, dude.' She chuckles. 'Come, follow me I'll walk you there.' She say before she starts climbing the stairs.
'You really don't have to, love. I can find it by myself.'
'No you can't. She says before realizing that might've sounded a little rude. 'I mean it's kind of a maze around here.' She chuckles.
'That's quite alright.''So do you ehm- have any hobbies?' She asks trying to keep the conversation alive.
'I play the guitar.' He says nervously. 'I like carving pumpkins too.' He chuckles.
'Cool. Do you sing?' She asks genuinely interested. She was glad he didn't say soccer or football. So cliché.
'Aye but I'm not that good.' He answers scratching behind his ear again.
'Sure you are.' She smiles. 'I sing too sometimes.'You idiot. He thought to himself. She's the prettiest lass you've ever laid eyes on and she's talking to you and you tell her you like pumpkin carving?
Way to go.
'We could sing together sometime!' She suggests. 'I mean only if you want to. No pressure.' She smiles.
'I'd be honored, love.'So... I hope you guys liked it! It's slightly different from the chapter in my one shot book but the headlines are the same. I'll try to update asap😘
