Hayden

"J-johnny? How did you get my number?" I asked.

"Hayden, you never changed it."

"Whatever, why'd you call me anyways? After all these years."

"Don't play the innocent one here. You're the one who left the squad to hang out with the 'popular kids'. That's how you turned into a jerk." He took a deep breath. "You acted like you didn't know who we were, except Annie."

I carefully listened to everything he said. It was true. I treated them like trash. Especially Johnny.

flashback
February 14th, 2019

I walked into the cafeteria with my two best friends, Taylor and Jake. We always come to school early so we could hang out for a little bit before class. I noticed that Johnny was staring at us from across the cafeteria.

"Hey, Orlando, happy Valentine's Day!." I said to him.

He didn't say anything but walk away. We chased after him.

"Aw, did Mackenzie finally realize how big of a loser you are?" I teased.

He kept walking away from us.

"Where do you think you're going?" Taylor asked grabbing the back of his collar.

He turned around. "I finally understand why you and Annie broke up now. She realized you were a jerk who didn't care about anyone but yourself." He said.

"What did you say?"

"Annie finally listened to me and the others. She actually cared about you, but then you started hanging out with the 'cool kids' and now you're spoiled."

I rolled my eyes. "Jake, get his bag." I demanded.

"Hey! Don't touch my stuff!" Johnny yelled.

"Make me." Jake said with a grin. He picked up Johnny's bag and held it up in the air. Luckily, Jake is really tall and strong.

I walked up to Johnny and pushed him against a locker.

"Now...what should I do with you?" I asked.

"H-hayden please. You don't want to hurt me."

"Oh really? I think I do." I said taking my fist out. "Don't ever talk about Annie and I's relationship or ever call me a jerk, Orlando." As soon as I finished my sentence, I punched him harder than I've ever punched anyone before. It hurt my knuckles.

"Gee, I never thought your jaw was that hard." I said kicking him.

He fell to the ground and screamed in pain. Jake and Taylor started to laugh, I did too. Then I thought, am I really that bad?

"Okay, Orlando, get up before a teacher sees." I said.

But he didn't move. At all. I bent down. "Orlando. Get up."

"Hayden I think you knocked him out." Taylor said.

"He's breathing. He'll be fine." I said standing up.

"We can't just leave him here!" Jake exclaimed.

"Well what are we supposed to do?" I said turning to Taylor. "You're the smart one! Think of something." I said.

"Johnny! Oh my gosh!" We all turned around.

"Annie? I thought you were leaving today." I said quietly.

"I came to say goodbye to everyone...what happened to Johnny?" She asked looking at all three of us.

"Well Hayden just beat the cr-" Taylor started.

"Shut up." I whispered.

"What did you do? Wait. You did this?" She asked hurt.

I didn't say anything. She stood up and walked closer to me.

"Did you hurt him?" She asked again.

I slightly nodded. She slapped me.

"I hate you." She whispered.

"Anns-"

"Do not call me Anns. Ever again. It's Julianna from now on." She said walking over to Johnny.

"I can't believe this. I just wanted to say goodbye to my best friends. Even you. But now, I don't ever want to see you again."

end of flashback

"You know, Hayden, after all the things you put me through, I always knew that the old Hayden was in there somewhere. You were always my best friend. Even if you didn't know it. Thanks."

"Thanks for what?" I asked. I don't get how he could thank me for beating him up, calling him names, making fun of him.

"Just thanks. It was nice talking to you. Even though it wasn't a long conversation." He said.

"Do you still live in Maryland?" I asked.

"I'm moving to California. My parents thought that it would be good for me." He said.

"When are you moving?"

"I'm currently at the airport waiting for this plane to arrive. There was a 5 hour delay."

"Oh, we should meet up." I said.

"Yeah, yeah we should."
