22: Hide and Seek
Pebble Miner watched as Sasha said goodbye to Felix and ran up the last step.
She supposed they were brother and sister after all. They might not ever share the same bond that she and Rock did, but they still shared blood. Any bond that they might have had was gone now, though. They had made that clear when the said 'Goodbye, sister' and 'Goodbye, brother'.
Felix had promised not to try and stop them from escaping. Maybe he would keep his word. Maybe he wouldn't.
And then his reference to 'the Blacks' and 'the Whites'. Unless he was being extremely racist, he was referring to chess.
Life wasn't just a game of chess to Olivia Green. It was a game of chess to Felix Brunner as well. Pebble wondered where she was on the board. In chess, there were eight major pieces on each team. At least numbers worked out so she wouldn't have to share a piece with Rock. She guessed that, if the ever going war between the A of E and Echo Valley was a game of chess, then three, reasonably powerful pieces, were returning from one side of the board to the other.
Gulp.
That meant that those three pieces would have had a very good chance for checkmate. But they would have returned to their side of the board because they weren't confident enough.
Should she, Rock and Sasha stay? Try for checkmate?
No. They had made their moves. Now the other team had moved his pieces so that they couldn't go back.

Sasha held out an arm to stop Rock and Pebble. She selected a pebble from the ground, placed it to her ear then the pebble to the ground so she could hear the vibrations. Then, she took out the phone J had made for her from her pocket.
"They're lots of people and wolves that way." She gestured towards the east. "Which is inconvenient, because we need to go South-East, towards the Midlands. They're blocking us off."
"So, we take a different route?" Rock asked unsure.
"Unfortunately, it's not as simple as that. The Lake District, it's at a position where are only option is to go that way." She pointed up at the mountains in the distance. "I don't want to go trekking up those. I'm pretty sure you feel the same way. Our best bet looks like to head to the tourism centre. Once we're there, we're fine. They can't attack us in front of people."
"You're a lot like Olivia." Pebble noted.
Sasha stared at her in surprise. Her? Like Olivia, the pretty, clever, powerful Olivia who everyone looked up to?
