I wake up in a pitch black box, barely able to breathe. I try my hardest to break my way out. When I finally do, tons of dirt caves in on me. Have I been buried alive?
I finally drag myself out of the dirt after what seems like forever and gasp for air. I look around and realize I'm in a cemetery. What is happening? What kind of sadistic person buries someone alive?
I walk out of the cemetery to the road and read the street sign.
Luckily, I recognize the name. I'm about eleven blocks away from the institute, but only two from the Hotel Dumort.
As much as I'd hate to show up and cause Raphael problems, my whole body hurts and I don't think I can walk eleven blocks right now.
I show up at the front door and knock as loud as I can.
Two vampires answer.
"Shadowhunter. You have no business here."
"I need to see Raphael." I demand.
"Why should we let you?"
"Tell him Arabella Ravenhart is here or you'll have a size seven shoe permanently implanted in your ass. Got it?" One of them nods and scurries away.
Moments later Raphael shows up.
"Arabella, what happened? You look like hell."
"Thanks, I'm pretty sure I just got back."
He lets me in and takes me to his room, immediately having me sit on the couch.
"What happened to you?" He asks.
"I don't know. All I remember is being on a mission. Next thing I know I'm buried alive. Do you have any food by the way? I'm starving."
"I don't eat, sorry. How do you suppose you were buried alive?"
"That's the problem, I have no clue. Could you have one of your minions get me water?"
"Sure, I'll be back in a moment. Don't move."
Once he walks out of the room, I realize it smells amazing. That sounds incredibly weird, but it truely does.
I look for the source of the smell and I'm led to a mini fridge in the corner of the room.
However, the only thing the fridge contains is blood bags.
Before I know it, I've already drank three of them. As I bust open the fourth, Raphael enters the room.
He sighs, "I was really hoping for your sake that this wasn't the case..."
"What is wrong with me?" I cry as i'm covered in dirt, mouth and chin dripping blood.
"Arabella, I don't know how this happened. You're definitely a vampire."
"No, that's impossible. There's no way."
"Unless you usually drink blood after immerging from six feet under, there is no other explanation."
I immediately break down in tears, full on ugly crying at this point.
Raphael pulls me into his arms and whispers, "it will be okay, I promise. I will help you."
"I'm a monster." My voice shakes.
"Hey, don't say that. You're not a monster. You can get through this."
I'm pretty sure I sat crying in his arms for another hour after that, before I was finally so exhausted that I fell asleep.
When I woke up, I realized I was a vampire, and every emotion hit me at once.
I left Raphael's room, which I was alone in. I stopped the first vampire I saw.
"Do you know where Raphael is?" I spoke.
"No, sorry." They respond.
I asked about four more before someone finally knew where he was.
I was informed that he went to the institute.
I also asked what time it is, and its just past midnight. Meaning, I slept for almost an entire day. I borrowed some clothes from a random female vamp before I left. Ironically, it's tight leather pants and a corset.
The walk to the institute wasn't too long, but it seemed like forever.
I open the door and Isabelle immediately runs up to me and goes to hug me, but I put my hand out to stop her.
"Izzy, I love you but I barely have self control right now."
She nods in understanding.
"What are you doing here?" Raphael inquired, almost angrily.
"I was told that you were here, and I need to speak with you."
"Very well, but it could have waiting until I got back."
I nod.
"Where is Jace?" I ask Izzy.
"In his room." She states.
I go to Jace's room and knock before entering.
"Hey shadowhunter." I give a tight smile.
"By the angel, Ara. I thought you were dead, we all did."
"How did I die?" I wonder.
"You don't remember?"
"Nope."
"We were on a mission and a vamp pushed you over the railing of a staircase. You fell straight down. Five stories, Ara."
"Well, then I'm glad you guys buried me as I requested, instead of taking me to the city of bones."
"You aren't mad that you're a vampire?"
I elaborate, "Of course I'm upset, but I've accepted it. I'm not going to sit here and be angry about something I can't change."
"That's a good outlook. Hey, how did you have vamp blood in your system anyways?"
I recall the night I hooked up with Raphael, remembering that it did get rough.
"Oh my god, it's actually so embarrassing." I break out in laughter.
"You can tell me." He reassures.
"The night we all went to that downworld rave, I saw you flirting with a seelie and I got jealous. I ended up leaving with someone, a vampire. When we were hooking up, I bit his lip. I guess it was enough to draw blood...and here we are."
Jace stifles a laugh.
"What's so funny?" I question.
"I'm glad you're here, don't get me wrong, but you literally turned the dumbest way," he laughs, "a drop of blood. A drop!"
I join him in laughing.
"Wait, you aren't mad that I hooked up with a vampire?"
"Upset? Yes. Mad? No. I understand the way it looked when I was talking to the seelie. I could see why you we're jealous. I mean, who'd want to miss out on all this?"
I groan, "I wish I could hug you right now, but I can already hear your blood flowing."
He hugs me anyways, dispite my warning.
I can't help it as I feel my fangs grow and sink into Jace's neck.
After a moment, I rip myself away.
"Jace," my voice shakes, "I-I'm so sorry."
"It's okay, no one has to know." He says as he heals himself.
"But I know. I can't ever forgive myself for this, Jace. Why didn't you push me away?"
"Listen to me, I let you feed off of me on purpose."
I stop crying and look up at him, waiting for an explanation.
"I'm sure no one explained this to you yet, but essentially, Clary and I have extra angel blood. A man named Valentine experimented on us when we were babies, injecting us with extra blood. Long story short, Simon drank my blood and can now walk in the sun."
"You're helping me?" I stammered.
"Yes, but no one can know. If anyone finds out..."
"I understand. But what do I say when they realize I can walk in the daylight?"
"Say it's because you're a shadowhunter turned vampire. You already had angel blood in your system. Since you have angel and demon blood, you're almost like a seelie, except you have human blood too."
