I quickly jerked the car to the left, managing to keep it on the street and avoiding the tree. The car stopped, the inside filling up with the gasps coming from our bodies. Izzy was still crying uncontrollably.
"Izzy, it's going to be alright." Miles said, turning in his seat to face her. He passed her a tissue from the glove compartment and she took it, sniffling and wiping her face.
"I-I-thought you said this was a vacation." She said in between sniffles.
Miles forced a smile. "It is, it is we just have to get there first, is that okay?"
She smiled back. "Okay." She said.
Miles brought his attention back to me. "How about I drive?" He asked.
"How about no." I said, starting the car back up.
"Dorian.." He brought his palm gently down to my outer thigh.
"I said I'm fine. Now let's go." I said, jerking my leg from under his touch. He gave me a pained look. I glanced away as if I didn't see him.
We continued to drive in silence for God knows how long. The road stretched out before us was full of corn stalks and just more highway. No other cars were on the road. My stomach gurgled in hunger. I looked at the clock on the radio and it was already 4:47. I sighed, realizing I didn't even call my Grandmother. I wondered if she was already one of them, one of the Zombies. Miles had sat up, stretching from his sleep. He glanced back at Izzy who was now sleeping, then back at me.
"Whatcha' thinking about?"He asked.
"Just where in the hell are we going to go?" I aksed. "We've been driving to nowhere for hours." I added.
"Well, my grandparents have this house in California that we only use during the holidays. My parents use it more for their anniversary nights if you know what I mean." He said, winking.
I blushed. "California is a long way ahead.." I said, sounding doubtful.
"I think we could make it though. Stops for food?Yes. There's only three of us,Dorie. We actually have a chance."
"You must have forgot about the crazy people we might encounter on the way?" I said, my voice rising in pitch.
He grew silent.
"And the zombies that will attack with no hesitation?" I added.
"There were crazy people before this even started. We have a chance, why won't you take it? Look-" He pointed to a sign through the windshield that read,
WELCOME TO OREGON'
"We're not so far after all. I mean, we just officially left Phoenix hours ago." He said.
That's it. My whole life as I knew it was falling onto the highway behind me. I used to hate Arizona more than I hated when my vegetables touched the rest of my dinner. Now I felt a small hole burn inside of my chest.
"Maybe we can find a gun store. Store up, if that makes you feel safer." He added.
"I am not letting Izzy around those things!" I said a little too loud.
"Who said she had to be? Those 'things' can save our lives. We do have massive room in the car. Dorie, just admit that we need that kind of protection so we can find our way to some gun store."
I bit my lip in frustration.
"You're really cute when you do that." He said, looking at me with those gorgeous eyes.
I glanced over at him, then returned my eyes quickly to the road.
"Fine." I said, smiling.
He pulled out his GPS and started explaining the routes to me, I listened and obeyed to all the turns and stops he told me to do.
We finally approached a gun store.
Atleast that's what it looked like.
