My legs felt numb as I ran. My heart felt like it would last not much longer as I heaved breaths.
I wasn't sure where I was running, I wasn't sure where I was hiding. But I was running far away. And although the possibility of my chance in life seemed so surreal, creatures were thrown at me.
Wolves howling a thousand miles away, summoning their pack to capture me. Limp, lifeless bodies throwing themselves at me while I dodged trees in utter darkness that terrified me. The faster my heart clawed, the more hopeless I became, and the more hopeless I became, the bigger the increase in monsters.
My legs began to slow down. I whimpered in panic and my arms shook as I attempted at longer strides, but the more I tried, the slower I became. Everything was catching up on me. Fangs were thrown onto my neck and I dodged them. The continuous change of color in their eyes cast terror in the pit of my stomach, and they sensed it. They knew I was terrified, and that encouraged them even further.
Behind me, everything began to close in, and silhouettes came into view.
"No," I whispered. "No. Please don't," a whimper escaped my lips.
"Scarlett," it whispered.
"No," I screeched when rough hands were pressed onto my exposed shoulders. I shook them when I noticed they felt unusually warm and I looked down, only to see two bloody handprints.
"Go away!" I fell against a tree as I yelled helplessly to the sky.
It didn't look alive. There were no stars. Only the moon. Floating on a blanket of oblivion, like I wasn't even standing on the grounds of earth.
Once the creatures backed away and disappeared, I noticed the familiar shaking of my hands. The sound of twigs was heard nearby, and just as I snapped my head up, I saw two bodies, one of which was holding the others neck with two hands.
I heard a snap.
And one of the two fell to the floor, soundless.
I cringed at the sudden thud on the earth not a few feet away, and looked back up again, only to gasp loudly.
Two black eyes were staring at me, through me.
"Scarlett," it whispered once more.
I screamed and sat up in my bed, terrified. My hair was matted against my neck and roughly against my shoulders and my heart attempted at the escape by ripping through my ribs. As I gasped for air, my bed creaked at the impact my body made.
"No," I whispered as my gaze moved to my window. It was a surprise when I'd found no light creeping in.
Was all this a dream?
Was my first day back at school yet to be completed?
I padded gently across the hallway and down the stairs, wrapping my robe around my torso tightly, like even the slightest blow of the wind was capable of ripping it off my body.
And as usual, I found my grandmother on her chair, colour of it chipped off due to age and contact against other surfaces.
As I moved closer discreetly towards her, I noticed the difference on her face today compared to other days.
Her eyes were not soft, they were not unreadable. Her right hand, which was normally busy twirling the pearls on her left wrist, was balled into a sturdy fist, spasming slightly at the fright I could sense. Pale pink lips were pressed into a thin line, quivering every so often.
