FLO WAS PATCHING A BANDAGE OVER THE SLICE UP HER ELBOW — WHICH NOW THAT THE PAIN WAS KICKING IN, WAS HURTING HURT LIKE A BITCH. She could hardly move her arm without a shot of pain running up it. She winced.
"What happened?" the woman asked, lowering a bag of ice to her chin. Nancy and Jonathan were sitting across the room, the latter still in handcuffs and Nancy holding ice to his wounds. Sar looked back at Flo. It was unusual for a girl to get involved in a fight, she supposed, let alone get hit in the face.
Sar adjusted herself in the chair. "I tried to pull them apart. Hit Tommy, and so he hit me. Guess I had it coming."
Flo just raised her eyebrows and nodded slowly with pursed lips, though she looked amused. "Mmm. And what was the fight about?" she asked.
Sar furrowed her eyebrows. "Jealousy," she said, nodding.
"Over that one over there, I'm guessing." Flo nodded over to Nancy. Sar just nodded with a small, teasing smile. Lucky girl, she mused. Her mind was darting back to Steve. They had been such a great team. Oh geez, what a mess this all is. We really have been compromised, haven't we? Her foot was tapping rapidly on the inside of the desk as the ice numbed her jaw. She winced. God her face hurt. She could only imagine how Tommy H. was holding up. That did make her smile.
Flo kept nursing the ice against Sar's skin. She seemed to have taken a liking to the small, snarky girl. "You gonna tell us who the other kid he was fighting was?"
Sar raised her eyebrows. "Uh... no?" She was shaking her head. Flo just gave her a look. Sar pursed her lips and shrugged.
A woman burst in through the doorway, ignoring the police officer's — Callahan's — protests. "Jonathan? Jesus, what... what happened?" Her hair was dishevelled and she looked distressed.
Callahan stood up. "Ma'am."
"Mom, I'm fine."
"Why is he wearing handcuffs?" the woman exclaimed, clearly distressed. Sar stood up at that, giving Flo a small smile. She made her way over to them, keeping the bag of ice on her forehead.
Callahan was standing across from the woman, moving his hands in slow motions, as if she was crazy. "Well, your boy assaulted a police officer, that's why."
The woman pointed at him. "Take them off."
"I am afraid I cannot do that—"
"Take them off!" she exclaimed louder this time.
"You heard her. Take 'em off," the man accompanying her said.
Powell was shaking his head at them. "Chief, I get everyone's emotional here, but there's something you need to see." The officer brought over a large box and slammed it down on the table. "We found it in his car."
"Ah, shit," Sar said, for what seemed to be the second time that day. Jonathan's mother looked over at that, studying her for the first time.
Joyce looked back. "What— what is this?" she asked.
