"HEY, SAR."
Steve's voice was beside her ear, warm breath on her neck. She could feel her front, covered by her own curled, crisscrossing arms, pressed up against his warmth.
"Mm?" Her face still ached, crumpling as she murmured out the sound. She was still half asleep, fingers grazing along the soft sheets. The girl cracked her eyes open, fingertips coming to rest on Steve's hand. She blinked at him sluggishly. By the feel of her face, and the way Steve was wincing at her, the bruises had only gotten worse. She grimaced.
"Wha— what time—?" She could hardly utter a cohesive sentence, still under the haze of sleep.
Steve looked down at her from his sitting position, shirt crumpled—he looked like he hadn't slept a minute. "You've only been asleep less than an hour. Sorry, Sar, but we've got to get you out to the party. Something's happened, the demogorgons are still out, and there's something wrong with Will."
Sar sat bolt-right up at that, hair flying across her face. She immediately regretted it, hissing and raising her palm to press against the pain throbbing in her head. Steve look alarmed. She glanced over at him, face still crumpled. "What's wrong with Will?" she asked. Her voice was steely but clearly terrified, eyes wide.
"Sar—"
She jumped out of her bed then, sheets flying across the mattress. The girl made a break for the door but Steve caught her first. "Hey." He stopped her by grabbing her firmly by the arm, preventing her from dashing out the door.
She pulled. "Steve— What's..." She slowly stopped, looking back up at him. There was fear in her blue eyes. Her chest was rising and falling quickly. "What's wrong with him?" she asked.
He pulled her back slowly, not wanting her to injure herself more. She bumped against his chest, looking up at him with desperate eyes. She remembered the shadow monster, and the flashes of the Upside Down. The damn doctors had told his mother it was all in his head. "I don't know. We haven't figured it out yet. But he's not himself. Joyce won't talk to us... but we think there's something in him. Some part of the Upside Down."
"Then let's go see him."
"Sar, we can't." He was still holding onto the girl's wrist as she furrowed her eyebrows at him. "He's sick. And something else happened... and we have to talk about it first, okay?" Steve said. He loosened his grip slightly, not wanting to bruise her. He took her hand instead. "Can you do that?"
She swallowed slowly, nodding after a moment. Her heart was thrumming, clouded with worry for Will. Still, she stood motionless for him. "Okay," he murmured, pressing a comforting hand to her cheek. Her heart jumped in her chest. The girl gulped slightly, lips trembling as she watched him.
His other hand was still intertwined with hers and he curled a hand through her hair, cupping the side of his head. Worry clouded his gaze as he watched her, head tilted slightly with concern. Steve's gaze grazed the bruises on her face from the overuse of powers. He opened the door.
