ONE MONTH LATER
PINK FLOYD PLAYED SOFTLY FROM A RECORD IN THE CORNER OF KATIE'S ROOM—the walls adorned with glowing star fairy lights and painted a light blue to match her fluffy bedsheets. The mirror on the southern wall reflected Katie and her older sister sitting on the edge of Kate's bed, where Sar was braiding Katie's hair carefully and intricately.
"You look beautiful, Kate," Sar said, standing up from the bed as she finished.
Kate still sat, grinning. She was in a colourful dress that stopped just above her knees and twirled when she spun. Sar had braided some daisies in her hair. Sara painted some eyeshadow on Kate's upper eyelids which sparkled in the moonlight, and even leant Katie her lipgloss for the night.
"I'm so excited!" Katie leapt, jumping to her feet. She let her intricately braided hair fall against her shoulder, grinning. "I can't wait to dance with everyone!" She did a twirl and the sequins on her skirts shimmered.
Sar brushed her own blonde hair away from her face with a brisk hand. "Where is Eleven, by the way?" she asked, standing up and brushing spare glitter from her jeans. She was in a cropped long-sleeved green shirt which hugged her waist nicely, hair tucked behind her ears.
Katie gave a soft shrug, inspecting her face in the mirror. The light amount of glitter highlighter which Sar had applied to her cheeks shone prettily in the light, and lit up the jagged scar which crossed half her cheekbone like fireworks. "Getting ready too. Probably in the bathroom."
Sar made her way down the corridor and stopped before the closed door of the bathroom. Sar gave the door two gentle knocks. "Knock, knock," she said, pushing open into the bathroom.
Several more lights were on inside than needed, and Sara's makeup bag was spilt over the tiled floors. Eleven looked up at her wide-eyed, fingers in a pallet of Sara's eyeshadows. She was perched on the edge of the sink, looking startled and slightly guilty.
Sara just smiled. "Do you want me to help you do your makeup?" Sar asked, walking over to El.
After a moment El lifted her head softly in a nod. She sat down on the edge of the bathtub and Sar joined her, grabbing an appropriate brush this time. "Thanks," El said gently as Sar gently turned Eleven's head to face her.
"That's okay, El. You can ask any time, really. I did Katie's." Sar inspected Eleven's pretty face. "You want pink?" she asked, gesturing to the colour El had already begun to apply to her eyelids.
Eleven nodded eagerly, smiling sweetly. "Yes please." She closed her eyes as instructed as Sar began to apply the makeup to Eleven's eyelids, evenly and with shadowing this time. Sara felt she was nervous, and lay her fingers on Eleven's cheeks gently.
