Lucy's P.O.V.
I gulped as I turned around. How had I been so stupid? Of course he sniffed me out. There, with his hands clenched into fists was Natsu, big tears in his eyes. I felt a pang of guilt in my chest, knowing that I was the cause of them. I opened my mouth to say something, then closed it. What was I supposed to say to him?
"Natsu," I finally managed to get out. He held one hand up, shaking his head.
"First, you've been avoiding me. And now, this? You're running away?" I flinched when he raised his voice.
"I'm not running away. I'm going on a job," I corrected, forcing myself to remain calm. Natsu started walking towards me. For some reason, I walked backwards.
"Then why aren't you taking the train?"
"Because I figured you'd show up on it if I did." I shot back. He looked at me stunned.
"Oh, so I was wrong. You're running from me," I stopped moving backward and let him approach me.
"I just wanted to take this job alone," I spoke quietly. "To feel like myself."
"Don't start that again," he yelled angrily. I looked down, unable to meet his eyes.
"I never meant to hurt you," I spoke quietly. "I just needed this."
"Lucy-"
"Please don't be angry," I pleaded.
"But you-"
"Natsu." I whined. Unable to help himself, his arms went around me and pulled me into his chest. I felt him crying into my shoulder.
"Don't leave me, then you idiot."
"I wasn't leaving you. I was working."
"You left me."
"I sneaked off so that I could do my job without you fighting all the things for me."
"I get carried away. Deal with it." He stuck his tongue out at me. I used my thumbs to wipe away his tears.
"I was; by not telling you and going off on my own," I clucked.
"That is-"
"My right as an adult," I completed his sentence, knowing that wasn't what he was about to say.
"Lucy. You're my mate. I need to be made aware of where you're going-"
"Don't pull that on me, Natsu." I warned. "This isn't going to work out if you don't let me be me, and stop making me live on a short leash."
"What's not going to work?" He asked, his fists lighting up with fire. I didn't want to meet his eyes anymore; I dropped my eyes to the ground.
"Us."
"So, you'll reject me because I worry-"
"I'll reject you because I refuse to become the girl who gave up on being a great wizard to obey an overly controlling guy," I replied, crossing my arms across my chest. His eyes grew cold, and he turned his back on me, walking back towards the guild.
"I'll see you whenever you return." Little did I know, that was the last time I'd be sure to Natsu for a while.
