"Just go, Kaitlyn," I said, fighting back tears.
"Chris, I can't. I don't wanna leave you. I promised to be here by your side. And I keep my promises."
I watched as I saw the love of my life let go of my hand and leave to live out her dreams in the big city. We had talked about for years. She was going to leave this little town of Joplin, Missouri and pursue her dreams in New York. I wanted the best for her, but I didnt know it would be so painful. I remember when Kaitlyn and I first met. I was only fourteen. I was just a kid...
---Flashback!---
I took another deep inhale of my cigarette. I always come to my local park at midnight when my family is asleep so I can smoke. None of them know. The only ones that know are my best buddies, Hayden and Taylor. I was always the new kid. Never the cool kid. My life at school is miserable. I'm not like the other kids. Back to reality. I sat down on a park bench in the cold midnight air. I heard footsteps in the distance. My heart pounded and I started to sweat. What could it be? A serial killer? A rapist? A pedophile? A murder? No, not at all. It was a girl. A pretty one. She had her brown hair in soft curls and she had the most beautiful brown eyes ever.
"Smoking is disgusting," she said, looking at my cigarette. So this is how people greet each other these days, huh?
"Nice to meet you, too," I mumbled.
"Hey, I'm sorry. But you shouldn't be smoking. How old are you, like fourteen?"
I blushed and started down at my shoes.
"Yeah."
"Well you're my age. Hi, I'm Kaityln Reed. What's your name?"
"I'm Christofer Drew Ingle. Just call me Chris."
"Cool. Why are you out here, Chris?"
"For my midnight cigarette. You?"
"I snuck out. My stupid parents were fighting and I can't stand to be under the same roof as them when they fight. They get violent, dude. But I don't give a damn if they notice I'm gone, which I highly doubt they would even care."
She was rebellious. I like it!
"My family doesn't know I smoke. They would kill me and kick me out if they found out. But the only reason I smoke is because it feels like an escape, you know?"
"An escape from what, exactly?" She asked with a puzzled look.
"From all the sh*t in my life. We always move around and for some reason, I never seem to fit in. I hate in here in Joplin."
She patted my shoulder.
"That sucks. I'm sorry to hear that. But hey, I'm pretty lonely too. My parents are divorcing sooner or later and I'm just as miserable as you."
I sighed.
"All I really want is to fall in love."
"Same here."
We sat in comfortable silence for a few seconds. I felt her hand slip into mine.
"I know I just met you, Chris. But we're both going through the same exact things. We should be friends."
Ugh, I thought. The good o' friend zone.
"Yeah, we should."
She rested her head on my shoulder and I let her. I tried to stay awake, but I was just too comfy here. Sleep had won.
I woke up."Tweet, tweet, tweet," sang the birds in the morning sky. Oh crap! I had spent the whole night here! I looked down to find a sleeping girl on my lap. I stroked her hair and leaned closer to her ear.
"Kaitlyn. Kaitlyn. Kaitlyn. KAITLYN!!!"
Her eyes flew open.
"What the heck? How did I fall asleep here?"
"I dunno. Let's just go back home before our parents find out!"
"Okay," she said and we both stood up.
"Tomorrow, same place, same time?" I asked desperately.
"Sure," she said and took off.
I ran back to her, kissed her quickly on the lips, and thought about this beautiful girl named Kaitlyn Reed the whole way home.
So that was my first chapter! What did you guys think? Let me know if you want me to keep updating this. In the sidebar thingy is the song for this chapter, Simple Enough by Never Shout Never. I love it!
Thanks so much for reading my story! :)
