As we watched Lee dig up the dog and take its collar, we all looked down in misery. It may have been just a dog, but it was horribly rotted and fallen apart. To be exact, when Lee took off the collar, the dog was so rotten the head fell off by Lee picking it up. It was horrible.
Rhiannon glanced over at me and looked back again at the door. Don’t pity me! I may be dying, but I’m stronger; this won’t affect me! It made me very sad, but I could get through it…
I looked over at Ben, and despite him not feeling well, this event made him look a bit more pale. I felt so bad for him! Part of his life was unwillingly given to me so I could live… The last thing I should do is leave him, right?
I also noticed that Travis did not look very happy. He looked angry, yet exhausted. Besides Lee and Omid, he was probably one of the ones who’ve run the most. He walked over to Ben and took the water from him.
“You’d better share!” He said with anger lacing his words from the inside out. “Everyone else deserves to get some too. All you did was sleep the entire way while everyone was working!”
Ben looked down and looked sad. What Travis said was true, but Ben also helped save my life! He was doing something useful too! But I wasn’t for certain that was why Ben looked so exhausted, that was only a guess. So saying that aloud would be kind of stupid, eh?
When we made our way into the building, we noticed all of the supplies had been taken, and that the windows and such were boarded up. It seemed fairly safe, but nothing was for sure. Lee gave everyone jobs, but Ben and I were told to rest.
“But we just slept for most of the train ride…” I said looking up at him.
“Yeah. I want to… I want to help the group!” Ben shouted, with a childish whine consuming many of the words.
“No.” Lee said with a stern voice. “If you guys get attacked, how could you fight back? You’re both exhausted and sick…” He looked around while we heard everyone working. “You’ll be back-up. How does that sound?”
I liked that idea, but Ben still looked dissatisfied. Just be happy we got any kind of job, you brat! Don’t forget it was YOU who got my parents murdered in such a cruel way! If I told that to my sister or to anyone else you were making bargains, you’d be DEAD! Today wasn’t the day to be selfish, okay Ben?
Thank goodness I was smart enough to not say that aloud… I didn’t want to tell anyone about that, but I realized I should once we get out of Savannah. Travis would get in trouble too, but so what? They both deserved to be punished for what they did. I’d rather it be the group and not just me.
When Ben and I got to the couch to sit down, we realized how pretty the mansion was. A huge picture of the family that must’ve lived here was on the wall. The picture had a woman, man, a boy, and a dog. Where had the family gone? I had a feeling I didn’t want to know…
I kept looking around, I was really starting to like this place. I knew it wouldn’t be a permanent place, but I would like it while I could. Just as I got to counting how many floorboards I could see, Lee came down with a dead boy. He looked like he hadn’t eaten in days, and you could tell he came back as a walker, but Lee must’ve killed him.
