Chapter 24: Disappointed

THE WHOLE TIME THAT I WAS AT AISHA'S HOUSE, I WAS THINKING ABOUT YASSEF AND MY FATHER. We started watching a movie after a while. The supernatural movie series 'twilight' was playing in her living room as My mind wandered around the thought of my father and Yassef interacting. He's never met Yassef before. He did hear of him and he knows how he looks like at a younger age but it must be weird seeing him now.

Especially as my husband.

But there was also a little bit of fear that crossed my mind at one point. What if my dad didn't like Yassef?

I remember when I was young, my dad wanted me to get married to another Sudanese guy. He wanted me to be married to somebody who could speak the same language and share the same culture as me. But it was pretty obvious that me and Yassef are completely different in nationalities.

He was from Eritrea. Our languages were similar, but weren't similar. You know what I mean?

It's like they sound the same and we understand each other sometimes. But he speaks a broken type of Arabic while I speak the full Arabic language. But the thing was that Yassef couldn't even speak his own language. He understands it but never speaks it. If I said something in Arabic (my language) he would understand me but would respond in English because he would like to cut himself the embarrassment of his English accent.

I was probably embarrassed when he spoke in Arabic with my mother though. That day, was absolutely unforgettable.

Aisha paused the movie, "Are you even watching?" She asked me. I looked at her after my zoned out moment.

"Yeah I'm totally listening,"

Weather I was listening or not, I don't see why I had to listen. I've watched this movie over thirty times. I know exactly what happens in the books and in the movies. Such over watched movies.

"What are you thinking about?" She leaned over, "Your head's been in the air since we started the movie"

I turned to her, "What do you think my dad and Yassef are talking about?"

"Why does it matter?" She fired back, "You can always ask Yassef when he comes back."

And she was right.

But because I was stubborn, "I don't want to wait that long? It's already been a few hours and——

Before I finished my sentence, there was a knock to the door. Both me and Aisha's eyes darted straight to the front of the house and she slowly got up to check who it was.

And then she rolled her eyes, "I guess you don't have to wait any longer," she said and then opened the door wide enough for Yassef to come in.

He looked perfectly fine and on top of that, he was smiling.

I got off the couch and began to bundle up. I put on my jacket and my gloves and tightened my hijab a little more before I left. Aisha winked at me and murmured a little 'good luck'

_____________

"What were you talking about?" I asked as soon as we got in the car.

"It's obvious," he said while putting on his seatbelt, "So obvious"

"Well what was it?"

"You." He said so plainly.

I had a feeling my subject would come in considering he is married to me. But I thought my dad wanted to get to know Yassef a bit more. I thought he wanted him to be a real guy or something. I can't even explain it.
