I went grocery shopping. What do you know? I mean, I've never usually been the one to go grocery shopping because it's usually Yassef who goes and does it. But today, today was different.
I, Emaan Reyaz, went grocery shopping willingly. Strange right? I'm actually doing something on my own for once, no mother or father or husband to even accompany me. I did this by choice since I had nothing so after work.
Yassef was also surprised with my offer. He was shocked, thinking I was pranking him. He looked around the room as if to say 'alright where's the cameras?'
Needless to say, grocery shopping was pretty fun. I just pushed a cart around the entire store looking at things that I might like or that might help us cook. The cart was slowly beginning to fill up as I went from aisle to aisle until it was pretty much full.
I was on my way to the cash register while I went through aisle number seven. It wasn't intentional it was just so I can go to the front and pay for our things. But I went into an aisle, accidentally bumping into someone.
The person I bumped into was male and had blonde hair. The smell of metal and iron around his neck definitely filled my nose and if I can smell it then we were obviously in close proximity. He was minding his business when I bumped into him.
I was expecting him to think 'this stupid hijabi girl doesn't know where to look!' But instead he just turned around.
I was about to apologize until I saw the face to the body. And then I froze.
Well, this wasn't supposed to happen.
You guys m can already guess who the hell I was standing in front of. It wasn't anyone I was immediately expecting. In fact, it was someone I wasn't hoping to see in a long time. Scratch that, in forever. Small town huh? Guess there's not that many people around here either.
Esteban. Well.
Why did he look so unbothered though? I didn't want to see him so I can avoid any kind of conversation involving the phone call that Yassef made to him. After all, they weren't friends anymore because of me and I couldn't feel more guilty about that. It was crazy you know? To break up a friendship that they both thought was so strong.
I was taught well enough to know that no matter what the circumstances are, it's best to be respectful. No matter how much of a dick head that he was to me and how much of a pervert he made himself seem, it won't change the fact that I bumped into him and that definitely requires an apology.
I gulped, hoping he would just let this slide "Sorry."
Like I said, he was unbothered. Almost as if he was expecting me to bump into him. Almost as if he hoped for it, so he can hold a conversation with me.
He smiled at me because of my poor apology, "Emaan. Good to see you again"
At work, we don't see each other often. I requested another shift time so that me and Esteban didn't have many encounters. Unfortunately, our boss wouldn't give all of my shifts a different time but only a couple of them. But fortunately, he gave me a different station at the store, one a bit further away from him. So I understands what he means by that.
I only nodded. My intentions were focused on getting the hell out of here and never to speak of this encounter again. Not even in my head.
"Come on Emaan. You cover your hair, not your eyes. You should see where you're going."
Rude.
I glared at him, hoping I would just shop my way out of here. I did apologize to him, he has no reason to keep talking to me. I did what I had to do and now I'm trying to leave.
