Christmas came around faster than I wanted it to. Only because Laurie is bringing home a girl. Her name is Veronica. She's a year older and from what Laurie has told me, a very cool person. She has stretched ears and a few cartilage piercings.
I sit at the window, waiting for my daughter to pull up in her car. She bought a brand new car last year. A Honda, actually. She loves it, it's lime green. If it has wheels and runs, then that's all that matters.
I perk up as I see her car pull in. I bolt to the front door, opening it.
"There's my precious angel!" I say as she gets out of the car. She runs to me and gives me a big bear hug. I look over Laurie's shoulder to see her girlfriend get out of the car and head to the trunk. Once she walked up to us, I was greeted with a very warming smile.
"Hello, Mr.Urie! So glad we are finally being able to meet!" Veronica said as she shook my hand.
"Oh please! Call me Brendon." She laughed.
"Well, I like to be called Ronnie. So, hi!" She smiled as she looked at Laurie. "I still can't believe that you were only sixteen when she was born, and yet, did the best job raising her!" I smile.
"I tried! Seems like she got a nice taste in women from me!"
"Well, I didn't get it from Sarah!" We all walk inside.
"So, Ronnie, where are you from?" She looks at me and smiles.
"Fort McMurray. I'm from Canada! Well, I'm not, really. You see, my parents adopted me from South Africa. Because I've lived in North America for so long, I don't have an accent!"
"Why did your parents adopt you, if you don't mind me asking?" Sarah asked.
"Oh, it's totally fine! My parents got together later in life, but they both wanted children. My mom was at too high risk of a miscarriage they just went the safer route and adopted me." She sipped her coffee. "My parents were in their fifties when they got married. They were in their sixties when I came around. My mom isn't here anymore, and my Dad's Alzheimers is so bad he doesn't remember me..." Laurie started to rub Ronnie's back.
"I'm- so sorry," I say.
"It's fine. My parents planned ahead and made me a trust fund. Until I'm 70 I get enough money to pay rent and groceries, so the money I get from my job goes to car insurance. And if I ever have kids, I get a huge bonus to start a wonderful life for my children."
"Have you guys... Talked about kids?" Laurie looked at me.
"We're both far from ready! But we've decided that Ronnie would carry the baby because, to be honest, I really don't want to know if I can or not."
