When she woke up in the safety of Enoch's bedroom, Olive realised her nose was bleeding from where she had hit the sink as she fell.
"Please sit down, we need to get your nose sorted out," Enoch gestured to his bed. Olive perched on the edge awkwardly while Enoch got a cold flannel. Olive tried wiping the blood away but Enoch gently took the flannel and did it for her. He cupped her cheek so that her face was tilted up in place for him to see. When he had finished, they stared at each other in silence for a few seconds before Enoch let go and stepped back. He took the bloody flannel to the sink and when he came back into the room, Olive was sitting more comfortably on his bed."Thank you for that."
"It's okay. I want you to feel better."
Enoch suggested getting some ice to stop the swelling but as he got up to leave, Olive reached her arm out and said,
"Don't go."
They went down to the kitchen together, treading cautiously as not to disturb Miss Peregrine or the other children. When they got there, Enoch was a gentleman again and made sure he looked after Olive. She winced as Enoch pressed the ice to her cheek but he held her hand and made her feel better. They didn't notice Fiona shutting the door, thinking the kitchen was empty as she was on duty tonight to make sure the rooms were secure, so it was a surprise when they found themselves locked in. After many unsuccessful tries of picking the lock or pushing against the door, they gave up and slumped to the floor. It was no use shouting because it would wake everyone up and they didn't want to cause a fuss. After about five minutes of silence, Enoch noticed Olive shivering so gave her his jacket to wear over her thin pyjamas.
They had no choice but to sleep on the floor as the chairs were too hard to sleep comfortably on. Olive curled up in a ball like a cat and Enoch stretched out next to her. Olive was cold despite the jacket and she woke up after a few hours because her sleep had been disturbed by nightmares. Enoch heard her tossing and turning and she kicked him a few times by accident. He gently shook her arm and she sat bolt upright, looking terrified.
"It's okay, you were having a nightmare. You're safe now." Enoch whispered reassuringly. Olive relaxed slightly and sat with her back against the wall. Enoch told her to go back to sleep so she lay down again and vaguely remembered him kissing her forehead and singing an old Scottish song.
