Chapter 28

Ethan's POV

It had been nearly a month since the god damn awful crash that had nearly killed Connie, Jacob and their kids not including Alicia and on New Year's eve we had all vowed that 2018 was going to be a better year but that all changed on new years day when me and Alicia got roped into working the day shift full of all the usual drunks and the usual vomiting patients with Hangovers from the new year celebrations but that all went downhill from there...........

Flashback

"UGH i hate leaving them so much , they're so little i don't want anything to happen to them " says Alicia sadly as they leave the creche after leaving Sadie-Belle and Lacey-Mai  and the rest of the masters clan .

"i know babe but before you know it this shift will be over and we'll be back at home with our gorgeous little munchkins we really do make beautiful kids babe"  says Ethan    

Later that day

"Dr Munroe are you sure you don't want me to get Ethan i mean you've fainted twice in the last hour and you really don't look very well " says the new F1 Dr Masum worriedly

" i'll be fine i'm fine really look if it makes you feel any better i'll go sit in my mums office "

" I'll walk you there , i need to collect some paperwork anyway for some time off me and Bea are going on holiday together in the spring " He keeps up a constant stream of nervous chatter

"Mmm sounds lovely " i agreed with him even though i felt like i was going to throw up , i felt really dizzy and i had raging stomach cramps .

Soon enough i collapsed to the floor into Rashid's arms and after that i don't remember anything other than him catching me and reassuring me that i was going to be fine and calling for help i thought this is it i'm going to die i've got two gorgeous little girls and i'm getting married i'm going to die ,then everything went black ......

Turns out Alicia had picked up an infection from the cinema because her immune system was already  so low after the accident, the infection had caused her internal organs to shut down causing her to fall into a coma due to the lack of oxygen to her brain and she stopped breathing momentarily due to a blockage in her throat after she threw up whilst she was unconscious.She hadn't been feeling well since christmas day but Alicia being Alicia she dismissed it as the Flu as the flu bug had been going around at work well that was until she collapsed after coming out of the cafe next door to the ED with dr masum with a sky high temperature and seriously low blood pressure which is what caused her to faint .

They found that the cause of this infection was a ruptured spleen caused by her fall down the stairs but that wasn't our main concern and her labor pains had masked the pain from her spleen . She was back up on ITU and was being closely monitored for infection and anyone visiting her had to be careful as risk of infection was high even though she was ventilated and on very strong antibiotics so i can't bring the babies to see her until she's cleared for risk of infection. Poor connie she's been in two high speed crashes in the space of a year neither of them her fault and now this she's nearly lost Alicia twice before but now she could die all because of something as simple as a ruptured spleen i just can't believe that i didn't pick up on this before i mean i'm a bloody doctor for goodness sakes.

Cal walks back into her room with two coffees and handed me one which i was grateful for . "Connie and Jacob are bringing Lacey-Mai , Sadie-Belle , Jack and Emily in later on now she has been cleared for risk of infection so hopefully after being in a coma for a month she might wake up but what if Cal what if she doesn't remember me or the girls or what if she has to learn to walk again i don't know if we can cope again she's already been through so much i don't think i can watch her go through all of that again it's like last time all over again i've just asked her to marry me again"

I held Alicia's lifeless hand in mine and twirled her engagement ring around her fingers. I kissed her forehead and whispered Always and Forever which is what i said to her the first time we went on a date and she asked me if i loved her and i told her i'd love her Always and Forever. I realised that i might be able to get her to react to a song our song the song we danced to at our wedding last time the song we would dance to at our wedding this time the song in mind was Have You Ever by S Club 7 , i quickly said my goodbyes to Cal and kissed Alicia and dashed out of the room and bumped into Alicia's nurse Chantelle in the process and told her about my plan and she told me to do whatever i had to do to bring my wife back to me and my cute daughters . I rushed down to the ED bumping into Connie in the process of shepherding the kids up to see Alicia very unsuccessfully as Sadie-Belle was screaming because she was hungry , Jack was crying because he missed his lesh and Emily was falling asleep next to an already asleep Lacey-Mai in the pram and Faith was miserable because she couldn't dance and was struggling with the disappearance of her big sister.

She thought something was wrong as i had run into her head first looking distracted but when i told her about the risk of infection clearing she was over the moon and said she'd take the kids straight up to see her now she'd been cleared for visitors. I arrived home and changed my clothes as i'd been wearing the same ones for a week as she'd deteriorated on Monday and her breathing had worsened so i hadn't left her side in a week, i grabbed a change of clothes for myself picked up Alicia's favourite nightie and smellies including some dry shampoo along with her phone and headphones . But before heading back to the ED i let Gracie's dog simba out and grabbed a few photos to put in her room then made my way back to the ED . I soon arrived back at the hospital and took the lift to the fourth floor where Alicia was as third floor was picu and nicu. I sat back down in Alicia's room and set the photos up on her bedside table there was one of me and her on our wedding day, one of her with Connie and Jacob and one of her, me , Connie and Jacob with the kids.

I called Chantelle in to watch and wait and see if she reacts to the song. I plugged the earphones into the phone and placed them gently in her tiny elf like ears and played the song now it was just a waiting game.

Third Person

Ethan took his glasses off and rubbed the tears away .It was horrible seeing Alicia like this , but his sufferings were nothing in comparison with hers. He had so nearly lost her . She must have been in so much pain and it would only continue once she woke up..... if she woke up.

He shook his head and told himself sternly that he had to be strong for Alicia and stop presuming the worst was always going to happen .

Ethan swallowed and made his way to the side of her bed. Very gently he took Alicia's hand in his " Hey babe it's me Ethan and Connie's here with Emily and Jack and she's brought two very excited girls to see their mummy" He had to stop and clear his throat

He looked at Alicia . Her face looked so white and so still , but so exquisite. As though she was made of porcelain. She looked so fragile and at any moment , she really could break and leave them forever..........

Ethan knew it wasn't likely. Most people made a full recovery from a ruptured spleen , but 'most' didn't apply to everyone. He couldn't assume she would be alright because he didn't know.

He smiled and then a tiny gasp escaped his lips.

Had Alicia just moved? Did her finger press against his for just one moment?                Or was that his imagination?

Ethan waited , but Alicia's hand was still.

It must have been my imagination.

"Oh Alicia," said Ethan , as his eyes filled with tears. "Please get better. If i had only one wish in this world , this is what it would be."
