*Harry’s POV*
“Tom, sit down.” Dads voice shakes slightly and I can tell his nerves and emotions are getting on top of him.
“Why? What’s wrong? Have you heard something?” Dad lowers his head as Tom looks around in panic. “Oh god, you know something , don’t you?”
He looks down and when he raises his head, his bottom lip is quivering and his eyes are red, tears already falling from them.
He whispers: “She’s gone, isn’t she?” He then lets out a sob and his whole body lurches forwards. “It’s all my fault, this is all my fault.” I stand up and move so I’m sat next to him. I gently put my hand on his back.
“Tom, stop. Tom you need to listen to me.”
He lifts both of his hands to his eyes and presses his palms so hard into his face that it must be hurting him.
“Tom, listen to me.” My raised voice causes the people around us to look but I don’t care. I’m past caring.
He moves his head to look at me and speaks through his tears. “What? What is it? You’re going to tell me that she’s fine ? That this is all going to be okay? No, no you’re not because nothing is okay. Nothing at all is okay.”
A second wave of emotion passes through him, this time anger.
“I’m so selfish. Why wasn’t it me? I should’ve jumped in front of the bullet. It should be me, this is all… this is all my fault… all because I wouldn’t give Tony the freaking money. What have I done? What have I done, she ..-”
“Tom would you just stop and listen to me.”
He jumps at my shout and quickly meets my eyes.
I let out a deep breath.
“Look, Tom, I never said anything would be okay, and I’m never going to be able to tell you that Katy will be fine.”
He begins to cry again.
-“But mate, if you would just let us talk, we can explain what the doctor told us, help you understand, yeah?”
He slowly nods.
“Just tell me first, I don’t care about what the doctor said if she’s… if… is she dead? Is… is Katy dead?”
I look over to dad, not wanting to be the one to break the news.
He shifts awkwardly and rubs his hands together; a nervous twitch I’ve become used to.
“Tom, son, this is going to be very hard for you to hear…”
“Dad, just tell me.”
“Her injuries, they were obviously very serious and she lost a lot of blood. They put her into intensive care where they managed to stop the bleeding but Tom; it took them over an hour to completely stop it and by then, her heart beat was so slow- her responses so weak that she was practically what they call ‘brain dead’. The doctors ensured us that she wasn’t aware of anything around her; so she wouldn’t have been in any pain.”
“Dad, please just tell me. Please.”
“Tom, she managed to cling onto life. The doctors called it a miracle but...they also told us that miracles like this don’t usually last. “
“Katy’s alive? She didn’t die?”
“She is fighting, Tom, but they are saying that it’s no more than a matter of time before..-”
“Don’t say that. Don’t say that.” He lifts his hands to his ears.
This time mum speaks. “Honey, we just need to prepare ourselves. Her only way of eating is through a tube. She can’t talk, She can’t move. All she can do is breathe and they say it may be a few hours before that becomes a struggle aswell. I’m so sorry, love. We are all devastated.”
I feel fresh tears running down my cheeks and watch as my brother crumples into a heap of devistation.
“No, no, You’re lying. You’re all liars. She’s going to be fine, she has to be. I mean come on, it’s her. This is all some sick joke, right? Or am I going to wake up? Please tell me you’re lying, dad… dad it has to be some kind of lie… Please, just tell me this is all a dream.”
Dad slowly shakes his head.
“She’s in a coma, Tom, and she’s probably not waking up.”
