[ PART TWO ]

the basement was more of a bunker; all concrete and no personality.
it was dank and smelt of cigarettes.
hanging from the low ceiling was a single light bulb which provides just enough light for you to see your surroundings, and if it's a bright enough day, you can even see the other side of the room and the filthy brick walls keeping it all together.i had only spent two nights in here and i already hated it.
everything about it just seemed like another tactic to make your mood drop from a hundred to zero in the space of two seconds.
it's so lonely and silent.
the walls are extremely thick and are able to block out all noise going on inside the house.
this only adds to the miserableness that consumes the atmosphere.
the silence is deafening.
it intimidates you into thinking the worst of the worsts and makes you want to curl up into a ball never to face the world again.
only i wanted to see the world again.
i had to see the world again.
somewhere in the world was max.
and i wanted to see him again.—
M A Xi trudged down the school hallway, talia by my side.
she was babbling on about her chemistry teacher not teaching them properly or something; i tuned out ages ago.
the only thing swirling my mind at the moment was sadie.
during our call she had said she'd talk to me tomorrow but it's been 2 days and i've heard nothing.
nothing from jonathan and nothing from her.
"max!" talia exclaims, snapping me out of my thoughts.
"y-yeah" i reply, turning my head to face her.
" did you listen to a word i was saying?"
"um, yeah"
" okay then what did i say?" she asks, stopping in the middle of the hallway and folding her arms.
"your chemistry teacher?"
"what about him?" she interrogates further, and as soon as i am about to reply someone shoves me from behind, causing me to stumble forward into talia.
"hey mills, how you doin'?" the gravelly voice belonging to mike herley speaks out from behind me.
his voice was deep.
whenever he spoke, every head in the room would turn.
he has that rich, silky tone.
he speaks as if he controls the world, his experience seeping through.
"what do you want mike?" i snarl.
"just coming to check up on my best buddy, ey? "
i squint my eyes and look him up and down in disgust.
i hated this guy.
well and truly.
"cut the tough act, mills, you know you wouldn't stand a chance" he chuckles and i roll my eyes, " so how about we talk"
"what about?"
" well, i've heard a rumour or two about you, " he pauses, a slight smirk appearing upon him lips, " about you and the homeless girl who used to own my locker"
he saw the shock register on my face before I could hide it.
a small smile played on his lips, I guess he gets that a lot.
"she wasn't homeless, herley, and who said you had the right to walk in here and talk shit about some girl you haven't even met" i speak through gritted teeth, that same stupid, cocky smile still spread across mike's face.
"well i go by rumours, and if everyone in this school is saying how disgusting she was then i'll follow the crowd. i don't have to meet the girl to make my judgement, and if she's homeless, i don't think i want to. could catch a bug" he smirks.
every word fuelled the fire that was burning inside of me.
every violated phrase was like gasoline to it, my fists began to clench and my jaw rooted.
burning rage hissed through my body like deathly poison, screeching a demanded release in the form of unwanted violence.
it was like a volcano erupting; fury sweeping off me like ferocious waves.
how dare he even think about talking of sadie like that.
"so max tell me, you gonna run away together and be the homeless married couple lurking the streets?"and that's when i hit him.
•••
yoooo
max's character development in everything.
he went from, "i could care less about sadie stevens" to "you dare fucking say a single word about her and i'll rip your throat out" real quick.
he protec, he attac and he also a snac.
