the autumn sun rose in a hurry as if trying to make up for setting too early the evening before, blooming into the pale sky with a warm mellow glow, sending what was left of the moon packing until its next shift guarding the night.
by mid morning, the sky was a brilliant baby blue.
as the morning developed the sound of young birds filled the air: chirping, tweeting and warbling incessantly.

" max! harvey! swing me! " tilly spoke excitedly, as the six of us walked in the brisk morning atmosphere.
" tilly, mum, dad and leo are already further ahead, it'll only slow us down " i say, sliding my hands into my pockets as i walk.
" but max.." she pleads, using the classic puppy dog eyes to try and win me over.
" yeah max, we're trailing behind anyway. surely one short swing won't matter " harvey says, siding with tilly.
the pair of them turn to look up at me, hope glistening in their eyes, causing me to say nothing but, " okay then "
tilly squeals excitedly and i take her hand in mine.
" ready..1, 2, 3, go! " harvey says as the three of us take off running.
me and harvey pause, allowing tilly to swing high into the air as she cheers in joy.
" again! again! " she says.
" you ready harv? " i look at him as he nods in response.
we take off running, only this time, harvey stops abruptly, collapsing to the ground and almost dragging tilly with him.
" harvey? " i say, worry sparking in my tone as i bend down to his level, " you okay? "
he doesn't respond.
" tilly, go get mum and dad " i say, she nods and run ahead.
" harvey, can you hear me? "
no response.
" harvey! "

" max! " a familiar, high pitched voice calls.
i look up and see talia shaking my shoulder.
" class is over, come on " she says.
i look around the classroom at all the empty desks before following talia out.
" what were you thinking about then, you completely zoned out "
" oh, um...nothing. it was nothing " i say.
" was it harvey? because it's normal to still think about him you know. i d- " she begins, only to be cut off by me.
" it wasn't harvey " i say sternly, my eyes focusing on every step i take.
however, my focus is broken as a buzz comes from my pocket.
i quickly pull out my phone, butterflies and excitement erupting in the pit of my stomach as i see the contact name.
jonathan.
only i knew, it wasn't actually jonathan.

JONATHAN:
max i need your help

MAX:
what? sadie? what do you need?

JONATHAN:
me and josh made a run for it

MAX:
you left?

JONATHAN:
no we went for an early morning run

MAX:
okay i get it

MAX:
why though?

JONATHAN:
because we hated it there

JONATHAN:
seems pretty simple to understand to me

MAX:
what do you want me to do

JONATHAN:
i don't know

JONATHAN:
talk to mr and mrs walker maybe

JONATHAN:
have a tea party with them

JONATHAN:
you know create an everlasting friendship

MAX:
okay cut the sarcasm pls i beg

JONATHAN:
oh i was being serious

JONATHAN:
i've already got you guys friendship bracelets

MAX:
ha ha

JONATHAN:
just come get us max

MAX:
i can't wait to see you

JONATHAN:
