My blue eyes scanned the pages in front of me, every once and a while looking up to see my sister working on her magic. We were both sent down her for our nightly study session of magic. My little sister, Rin, was almost ten years younger than me. The gaps between our ages was so big because mage families aren't supposed to have more than one child. Yeah, we're mages. People who posses the power to control the mana in their bodies to use spells. Don't get us confused for witches and wizards though, they've got nothing on us.

Mage families aren't supposed to have more than one kid. That was a rule that every mage family attempted to follow due to only one child being able to get the family crest. My parents figured, however, that if the child didn't have any magical potential then they could keep her. Although, Rin did have a great deal of magic potential, as well as my youngest sister, Sakura.

The Mages Association heard they wanted our parents to stop training one of us. They were just barely able to keep training two, but they couldn't keep training Sakura. Instead, our parents gave her to the Matou family, who didn't have an heir that had magic potential. Which meant that we never got to see Sakura again, at least never get to see her again as a family.

Rin at the moment was working on creating her mana crystals. Unfortunately, she couldn't seem to concentrate just the amount of mana needed for what she was doing. So, every once and a while a small explosion was heard. After a little while, a small explosion was heard again, the smoke filled the room leaving an underlying smell of something burning. Not too long after the smoke appeared, I heard the faint sound of someone coughing. I turned slightly towards Rin, a worried look in my eyes, "You okay?"

She coughed a little bit more, "Yeah, I'm alright," her voice was hoarse from the coughing. She looked up at me, tears pricking in her eyes. She had been trying for the past few hours to create her crystals, but alas she failed every time. Before I could try to cheer her up and help, another voice spoke.

"Rin," we both turned to the stairs to see our father, Tokiomi Tohsaka, standing in the doorway. He was a tall and respectable man, with dark hair that matched Rin's long dark strands and the blue eyes of the Tohsaka family.

He walked up to Rin and saw the mess of crystals in front of her. "You're using too much mana at once. You need to maintain a calm mind. To control magic, you must first control your mind," his voice was firm but held a gentle tone. A reassuring one. It was a tone that always seemed to comfort me when I was younger, just as it was comforting Rin. He put his hand slightly over the crystals and a blue light shined, showing that he was using magic. The light shined throughout the room, reflecting off every corner. The broken crystals started to gather to create one single crystal. "Lose control, and the mana will rebound back to your body," he closed his fist. "Too much power, or power in the wrong form, will not only endanger you but those around you as well."

He started to control the mana surrounding the gem, "Strive to consistently maintain the proper flow. That is the Tohsaka family motto. It means always remaining reserved and elegant." The crystal grew and Rin's eyes shined in amazement. I smiled slightly as she looked in awe at the magic that was happening in front of her. She was always amazed by magic. One of the many reasons why she'll become a great mage. A mage must always remain curious, that was the only way you could become stronger. It was a quote father had often said to me when I was younger. A quote that always sticks with me. The glow died down to show a crystal horse, our dad picked it up before asking Rin to hold out her hand.

A faint smile appeared on my face as I remember when he showed the same trick to me. I was having problems controlling my mana flow too, it often upset me. Almost to the point of giving up magic and just being normal. Father didn't want to hear any of it, he pushed me to become stronger, striking my curiosity for magic by showing me the crystal figurine he created. I turned the page of my spellbook as Rin and father talked more. "I have something that I will need to talk to both of you about. Follow me, please," he said a little louder, making sure I heard him. I nodded slightly, closing my book and setting it aside for a later time.
