MISFITS

WORD COUNT 2.8K
OVERVIEW both of them were misfits, as far as society was concerned. ( inspired by the fault in our stars/a phan fic i'm reading / mentions of homophobia & homophobic slurs )

THE OXYGEN TANK WAS the first thing everyone noticed when the new kid walked in. no one really knew what to say, did they? of course, jeongguk didn't want them to say anything. he had cancer, yes, he wore a cannula, yes, it helped him breathe, he didn't want to answer anymore dumb questions from people who could actually breathe without needing assistance in the form of a small green canister.

i supposed they're staring because there's lots to stare at, jeongguk thought as he walked through the corridors of his new college. his fifth school in the seventeen years of his life; they had to move again because of him, because of him and his fucking cancer. and now he was back to the beginning, back to being the weirdly skinny kid with the cannula and the tank - who he'd decided he needed to name - and he was back to being stared at like a goddamn zoo animal as his older brother kiko attempted to escort him to the principal's office.

jeongguk ignored all the stares he was given as he listened to troye sivan, earbuds shoved deep in his ears so he could block out all the generic school sounds. kiko had located the office, and jeongguk's eyes scanned over the silver hangul printed on the glass of the door. hwan naeha, principal. another city, another school, another principal who'd treat him like he was made of glass. great.

"miss hwan?" kiko poked his head around the door, a polite smile on his face. he was always the perfect child. "i'm jeon sungki, i'm here with my brother."

the principal replied in a soft voice, and kiko beckoned jeongguk in, the younger removing his earbuds. the little oxygen tank trailed behind him, and he felt a little lightheaded. he needed to sit down, he'd been standing and walking for too long. inhaling deeply through his nose, jeongguk forced a smile at the woman he'd probably come to know well, before gratefully taking a seat in front of her, beside kiko.

hwan naeha was a tall woman, with cinnamon coloured skin and curly honey hair. she dressed sharply, with a pair of round rimmed glasses perched on her small nose, and she smiled warmly at the two brothers, like all the principals before her had done. it did look rather genuine this time, though.

"welcome to hwan boy's college, jeongguk," she directed herself at jeongguk, rather than kiko, which was different than the other four principals. they'd wanted to speak to sungki or jeongguk's mother. "i hope you'll feel welcome here. our students are all quite accepting and understanding, the boy you'll be staying with especially."

"thank you miss hwan," jeongguk's voice was as fragile as the rest of him, but he managed to sound like he was at least a bit pleased. "i'm, uh, looking forward to staying here."

"our mother and father just want him to have a normal life," kiko explained, forever better at conversation. "he might have to miss classes sometime though. surgery and check ups and the like."

miss hwan nodded understandingly, head perking up when she heard a knock at the door. jeongguk looked over his shoulder; could this be a student, sent to the office because of his behavior? but the smile on miss hwan's face denied that.

"come in!" she called, and the door slowly opened, a head of bright silver hair poking in. jeongguk sucked in a breath at the sight of the boy, biting at his lip.

"jimin, come on in, don't be shy." miss hwan smiled. jimin was, in jeongguk's eyes, absolutely gorgeous. his chocolate eyes were nervous as he stepped into miss hwan's office, and jeongguk nearly cracked at grin at the nervous boy's appearance. he was more feminine than jeongguk would've expected in an all boy's college; the baggy white sweater hanging off of jimin's shoulders, the bruised knees revealed thanks to his pastel pink tennis skirt and fishnets tights - god, it must've been illegal for those tights to look so good - and the pale blue nail varnish jeongguk could spot as jimin ran a hand through his bangs.
