When found a spot in the mountains to camp out in. So far, there weren’t walkers around for miles and it seemed like the best place to be. Everyone set up their tents as I sat in the back of my truck, watching. Merle was setting up a fire pit and Daryl was on a hunt. I sat with my legs crossed and I heard footsteps coming my way. I turned to see Lori walking with Carl.
“Hey Aaron?”
“Yeah?”
“I’m going to go look for some food, will you keep an eye on Carl for me?” She asked.
“Sure,” I said and patted the spot next to me.
Carl jumped on the truck and sat next to me.
“Behave for Aaron okay?” Lori said to her boy.
“Okay mom.”
She kissed the top of his head and left. Carl sat looking at the ground and swinging his legs. I sighed and ran a hand through my hair.
“Not much to do during this time right?”
“Nah, not really,” he replied.
“Here I have something for ya,” I climbed to the front of the car and opened the glove box. I moved some things around before I found it. I moved back and held the small box to Carl.
“Here, it’s a Gameboy, it runs on batteries and I have tons of them.”
He took it with an amazed look on his face.
“Thanks so much Aaron!”
I ruffled his hair, “No problem kid, sorry I don’t have a lot of games for it, next time we go out I’ll try to get you some.”
“This is perfect.”
Carl opened the Gameboy and started playing on it. He seemed so happy with the small device. I grinned as I watched him play with it and asking me for help every now and then. Everyone was going on about their business and doing whatever. I looked out to the group and everyone seemed tired and on edge.
“We need supplies,” I heard Shane call from a few feet away.
Everyone turned to him.
“We need a group to go on a run tomorrow at first light.”
A group volunteered, but I decided to stay back on this one. I didn’t have the energy for one and I wanted to hang around just in case anything happened. I saw Carol walk by Carl and I. She smiled at me and walked over.
“How are you Aaron?”
“Fine, just hanging with Carl here,” I said nudging him. He laughed and went back to his game. I saw her eyeing the foreign piece of technology.
“It’s a Gameboy. I found it on a run a while back and figured he needed something to do.”
“That was nice of you. I see you’re not setting up a tent. Do you not have one?”
“No, I can sleep in Ol’ Essie. She’s comfortable and roomy,” I replied grinning.
“Well if you ever need a tent to sleep in you can always bunk with us.”
I inwardly shivered at the idea of sleeping in the same tent as Ed.
“Thanks.”
Carol nodded and walked away. Carl asked me another question about the game and I answered it happily. Now, this gave me something to do, maybe hanging around kids wasn’t such a bad idea.

Nightfall finally came and Daryl came back with some meat. I watched from my truck as everyone gathered around to eat. I leaned my head against the window and sighed taking in the chilly spring air. There was a knock on the trunk and Daryl placed some food next to me.
“Thanks, but… I’m not hungry.”
“You gotta eat somthin’ kid, ain’t no use in starvin’ ya self.”
“Not starving myself, just not in the mood to eat.”
“I’ll leave it here, jus in case ya do get hungry,” Daryl said before starting to walk away.
“Thanks,” I mumbled. I grabbed the blanket and pillow from the front and pulled down the trunk. I wrapped myself in the blanket and sighed trying to get warm. I rolled over and looked at the bowl Daryl left for me. I put my hand in and pulled out some of the meat and put it in my mouth. Yeah I wasn’t that hungry. I rolled over and tried to get some sleep.
