"Anybody infected?" He asked.
"One of our group was, but he's not with us anymore," Rick answered.
"Why are you here? What do you want?"
"A chance," Rick replied
"That's asking an awful lot these days," the man noted.
"Way to add oil to the fire," I mumbled, but I don't think anyone heard me, nobody usually did. Daryl nudged me, and I looked up, well Daryl always heard me.
"I know," Rick said almost defeated.
The doctor eyed us, "Each of you submit to a blood test, that's the price of admission."
"We can do that."
"If you have stuff to bring in, bring it in now, because once those doors close they won't open again," the man said. I grabbed my bag and once we all had our stuff and were inside, the man told someone named VI to close the doors and to shut off the power. We all crammed inside the elevator, so much that my back was pressed against Daryl's chest.
"Doctors always go round packin' heat like that?" Daryl asked.
"While there were plenty lying around I familiarized myself... but you seem harmless enough... Except you," He said motioning to Carl who could hurt a fly. Carl grinned and looked around as if he planned to steal everyone's underpants tonight. "I'll have to keep my eye on you." We stepped off the elevator and into a large open room with computers, man what I wouldn't give to play a game of Galaga.
"VI bring up the lights in the big room," Jenner commanded, and as he said the lights lit up the area. "Welcome to zone five."
"Where is everybody? The doctors, the staff?" Rick asked.
"I'm it," Jenner asserted. "It's just me here."
"What about the person you were speaking with... VI?" Lori asked.
"VI, say hello to the guests... tell them welcome," Jenner commanded.
"Hello guests, welcome," VI responded.
"Virtual Intelligence," I said in awe.
"Someone gets it," Jenner said with a light chuckle. "I'm all that's left... I'm sorry."
I guess it really isn't his fault it's not like he planned this apocalypse all he did was stay when everyone else booked it. Jenner lead us to the room where we would be conducting our blood tests, a white walled room with chairs scattered in an orderly fashion. Dr. J started taking the blood samples, I went first, I didn't mind the pain, I thought getting shots were kinda fun and was a regular for donating blood.
"You sit pretty still for someone getting a needle stuck in their arm," Dr. J said amused at my stillness.
"I don't mind needles," I replied smiling. The doc gave me an odd look probably wondering what was wrong with me. That was okay though sometimes I had a dark sense of humor. The doc was finished with my arm and I sat in a chair and started plucking at the split ends of my black hair. What I wouldn't kill for a shower.
"What's the point? If we were infected we'd all be running a fever," Andrea instigated. I sighed, she just couldn't do anything without question could she.
"I've already broken every rule in the book by letting you in here. Let me just at least be thorough," Jenner replied sternly.
~
Well thing was for sure Andrea's little fainting act caused us to get to the food faster that would have been expected and man I wasn't complaining. Everyone sat around the tables laughing and having a good time, as if this was some family reunion. Dale was pouring glasses of wine and tried to offer me one, I declined the offer never being one for alcohol, but apparently, Daryl was since he was downing a whole bottle himself.
