Harold - July 1924

"We need to get these transcripts finished today!" My father yells, his voice sounding through the whole office. What I don't understand is how he is so stressed. I come into the office everyday and get my work done without a thought in my mind. But something even the slightest little thing is wrong my father goes berserk.

My fingers glide over my eyes as I let out a breathe while shaking my head. I don't have the slightest idea why he always has to be over dramatic when it comes to work. If you ask me he is the one that's causing so many mess ups. Ever since my parents separated he had been so unpleasant to be around.

"Hello Harold." My friend Charles says while sitting on the edge of my desk.

"Hello Charles." I say politely back as I organize the cases on my desk.

"What are you doing tonight?" He asks.

"Nothing, probably just going to go home and read." I said looking at him. "Why?"

"Well there's this club I told a few men about and they were wanting to check it out. Would you want to tag along with us?"

"Gee, I don't know. Where is it?" I ask and he grins.

"That's the fun part Harold, it's hidden." He says and my eyebrows furrowed in confusion.

"Hidden?"

"Yes, apparently you have to know people who work there to get in. My cousin works there and he told me about it a few weeks ago. We've been going there since then, it's gotten a whole lot better. They have this new singer with a great set of pipes, real looker too."

"Charles." I say scowling him. He never had any respect for women.

"What?! She does look good! It's a compliment." He says trying to defend himself.

"Yes to you it may be a compliment but to her I'm sure it's a little rude." I explain.

"Oh well." he says as I stand up to carry the case to the filing room. "Are you tagging along or what?" Charles says following me.

"I suppose so, beats staying home bored."

"Alright man, see you tonight. We are meeting up front and leaving at closing." Charles says.

"Sounds good." I say as I open the door to the filing room. Once I have the files where they belong, I shut the door back and walk back to my desk.

When I'm seated back down, I see my father walking towards me in the corner of my eye. Mentally I groan in my mind, what does the man want now?

"Harold." Father says greeting me. "Father." I say greeting him back.

"Will you be joining your mother and I for dinner? Your sister is arriving in the morning from England." He says.

"I'm actually going out with some colleagues tonight." I say clearing my throat after I'm finished speaking.

"Where are you going out that is more important then spending quality time with your family?" He asks and I roll my eyes a bit.
