THE AIR INSIDE the interrogation room was stale, the overhanging light too bright for comfort as Detective Baizen takes a seat on the opposite side of the scuffed steel table. Across from him, a serious and tired woman sat casually against the cold metal chair. Her wrists bound by handcuffs to the table as her eyes were blank of any and every emotion.
Detective Baizen looked at her for a short moment, trying to remain professional after the long months of chasing this woman and her partner in crime. With a brief clearing of his throat, Baizen sat up straight and clicked the button on the tape recorder, placing it in the center of the table. The women's gaze flicked over to the area, her eyes seeming to brighten slightly before narrowing on the young detective.
"Mrs.Abbey, my name is Detective Baizen. I just want to ask you a few questions, if that's alright with you."
The women's unruly curls draped her features in an almost elegant manner, although the rest of her appearance was poor insight.
"Your compliance is greatly appreciated." The young man adds, clearing his voice in a nervous manner as the woman moves slightly, seeming to size the rookie up as a sly smirk made its way onto her tired features. Though Athena was indeed very run down, her smile was still bright and intact in every beautiful way possible. That was the same smile that got her out of all the trouble she got herself into.
A weapon she never knew she possessed before Jake Abbey."So, Mrs.Abbey. You do know why you're here today?"
Athena leans back in her chair, her smile faltering as her eyes land on her chained wrists.
"I have a feeling." She counters, giving her wrists a quick flick as the metal clicked obscenely against the steel of the table.
"Let start from the beginning, alright? Tell me how you met Mr.Abbey-"
"-Jake-" the women interjects, her eyes seeming to stare at nothing in particular as she wore a blank expression.
"-yes, I apologize. Jake. When did you first meet him?"
Athena's eyes seemed to water at the question. That felt like ages ago. She could still feel her hands tremble as they did when she had them folded down in her lap in the booth at Augustine's. A darling Jake seated just across from her, his aura was mysterious and just so enticing. She should've had a clue.
"He was so kind, he's always so good to me," the women began, her voice low as she tried her best to remember the most detailed aspect of her first actual encounter with the infamous Jake Abbey.
"You're both from Ike, correct? You've known one another for quite some time..."
The woman smirks, a small giggle escaping her chapped lips as she nodded.
"Yes, we knew of each other."
"So you hadn't officially met?"
"Once, in high school. He helped me with my books." She almost whispered, her index finger creating small shapes onto the cool steel surface of the table.
"When did you realize that Jake was different?"
"Different? How do you categorize that term?" She almost chuckles as Detective Baizen begins to get annoyed.
"Did you not think it was wrong for Jake to kill innocent people? For you to help him?-"
A laugh echoed through the dingy lit space, Athena Williams letting her head fall back as she just laughed.
"Oh god, he didn't just kill innocent people!"
"Then why don't you explain to me August twenty fourth of last year. Explain Ethan Piles to me, Mrs. Abbey." He counters strongly, his eyes stern as he stared at the seemingly deranged women before him.
Athena Williams did things she clearly wasn't supposed to do, she was unhinged. Her beau was just as bad, and maybe even worse.
"You aided in the murder of over thirteen people, Athena. You don't see any wrong in that?"
Athena went back to being silent, the detective's previous question involving Ethan Piles making her mind work like a video tape-as she relived the night as if she was currently there again.
"Mrs.Abbey? Athena, I need you to answer these questions,"
She didn't answer him. Instead, she stayed mute as the memory faded. Her eyes locking with the young detective in competition, to see who held the most power. As young detective Baizen looked away, a dark chuckle slipped from Athena's ashen lips.
"I win."
