ATHENA SAT WITH her hands on her lap at the dining room table with the two teens she so willingly gave shelter to. They each ate slowly, their sandwiches were barely eaten as they were too worried about the daunting Jake Abbey who stared at them from the kitchen entrance with his arms crossed and brows drew downwards. It wasn't long until the sun started to set, night fell quicker than usual due to the incoming storm. The wind blew ferociously outside, the warm home practically shook from its speed and strength. Athena tended to the boys as much as she could, even helping set up their sleeping quarters in the dimly lit living area. The fireplace was kept on to keep some sound in the eerily quiet home, but the warmth which radiated from it was more than enough reason not to shut it off.
"You boys are set. There's water and some snacks in the kitchen if you get hungry. Jake and I will be upstairs if anything."
The young boys nodded once, looking to one another then back to Athena with odd expressions.
"So, are you guys married? I'm just asking because I don't see a ring." Christian states, his question obviously inappropriate.
Athena's smile faltered, her gaze setting ups on her ring finger swiftly before her lips tugged into a straight line.
"No. We are not married."
"So what are you?"
Athena let out a strangled breath, forcing a tight-lipped smile on her face as she attempted to fluff a pillow on the couch.
"Jake is my boyfriend. You guys are quite curious, aren't you?"
The boys clear their throat, Tyler nodding slightly to Christian as he slowly reaches out towards Athena's chest. She hadn't realized his stealthy movements as she was fixing the sheet she had placed on the couch for Christian to sleep upon. The boys nearly screamed when a deep voice resonated in the once silent space. Jake Abbey had been quietly watching the little scene layout before him for about five minutes now. The questions, the awkward answers, the failure to grope Athena without her notion...
"Cell tower is down. Couldn't get in touch with anyone on the other side. Seems like no one knows where you boys are, then."
Christian and Tyler looked at one another, their faces speaking volumes as they felt the malice from Jake's words. They were not welcomed. They could feel it.
"Uhm, Hey, maybe we can try again in the morning. Hopefully, the snow has passed and the service is back up and running." Athena said, trying to lighten up the situation but, Jake knew what those teens were up to.
Christian and Tyler saw Athena and their eyes glazed over. They figured they'd try to "score" as Tyler put it so casually to Christian, and seeing as Athena so desperately wanted to help them-they used that as fuel.
