Another year coming to a close. It was the final day before summer and I guess I was excited. I was going to the 'big place' with Zoe, Louise and Zoe's boyfriend who I was yet to meet, to go shopping for the day then we were having a big sleepover and I was also invited to Tanya's sweet sixteen in August. We lined up for the big assembly that we had to go to every year but me, Zoe, Tanya and Louise all sit at the back and munch on sweets. For some reason Mr Butler pulled me aside.
"Lauren, I want you to sit at the front today" he said. Oh god! Whenever someone got sat at the front hey were either going to be told off and embarrassed or they were winning something which was equally embarrassing. I shrugged at Louise and Zoe them took a seat at the front with the nerds.
"Settle down students, now first of all we have the 100% attendance awards" Mr Butler began, I won nothing from the 7 awards and I wasn't pulled up to be embarrassed either. Just before the bell went for home time Mr Butler mentioned my name and I was dragged in to stand I front of 2000 students.
"Now Lily has been putting up with something for a long time that many of you might not know about" he began what was this about? "Her dad goes away for months at a time to go and serve his country" oh god! "But we have a surprise for you Lily"
"Hey Little Solider" he was back! He was safe! He was home! I ran from the opposite side of the gym hall and leapt at my dad who was stood in the entrance to of the fire exit. Tears were streaming down my face and I heard a few yells and cheers from the audience but I didn't care. We hugged and I clung into him like a toddler.
"Your not leaving again are you?" I asked him as he drive me home from the gruelling day at school.
"Not until next week" he said "I asked for a week so we could spend some time together"
"Yay!" I said "we can go to the theme park and go shopping and..."
"Baby, I know your excited but we don't have the money for that" he said my heart sunk.
"I'll go hopping with you instead of with Zoe" I said "she'll understand"
"No you're still my daughter and Zoe is your best friend so go with her cause there's always other times to go shopping" he said.
"True" I said.
"We could go get you some more music stuff?" He suggested.
"Yeah!" I said as he turned down into a cobbled road and parked in an alley next to my favourite music shop. Smittons, sells amazing CDs and writing paper and pens and notebooks. I walked in and headed straight to the new collection of CDs. I loved Dance tunes and a few rap and quite a lot of love songs.
I bought three CDs and a new notebook, Dad didn't let me get a pen though. We went back out to the car and sighed as we sat down and turned in the AC.
"I got you a present" Dad said finally.
"What is it?" I asked turning to fave him all excited. He brought a little box from his pocket and handed it to me.
"What's this?" I asked opening the box. We little silver pen was inside. LILY, MY AMAZING DAUGHTER was scribed into it.
"It's a special pen" he said "it can write under water, on grease, upside down and when it's really hot or cold"
"That's amazing" I said giving him a hug and we drove away.
