Jessica woke up to hearing her mom nag at her to get up. It was something about how their small farm depended on her to wake up so everything runs smoothly. She had just finished her local fair and it was now late July. Her "farm" now only consisted of eight chickens, a few cats, and a few dogs. She sold most of her farm at fair.
"Jessica! Get up right now. The least you can do is wake up and take care of your animals since you won't do anything with the life that the Lord wasted on you!" Her mother screamed. Now she was ticked. She was a waste of a life?
"Don't even go there! At least I'm not forty with two kids and still working as a waitress," Jessica spat.
"Well at least I make money! You know what? If you don't get a job your out of here!" Her mom yelled. Jessica rolled out of bed and started packing her stuff.
"Wha-what are y-you doing?" Her mom asked.
"Well I'm not gonna stay here with you ,Joanne! I'm going to find better. Don't worry though you'll never see this disappointment again!" Jessica shouted grabbing her keys and walked out the door. Her mother stood in shock. Jessica got in and headed for her grandparents house. They died eight months ago but they left her their land and house. Driving through town a wreck had created quite the back up.
"Come on! You've got to be kidding me," Jessica spat but then she looked up. Right there was a small office that had MARINES written across the top.
"Hmm. Why the fuck not," she said turning into the parking lot. She got out of her car. She walked up and didn't think twice before pulling the door open. She saw a man in his mid thirties sitting at his desk. He slowly stood up as she walked over.
"I need recruitment papers," she ordered. The man acknowledged her not wanting to talk so he gave her a nod as he fished for papers in his desk. He pulled them out and slid them across the desk. He motioned for her to sit and she did so.
"Now take your time. If you want to talk to your family and.." she cut him off.
"My family has no say. Stuff happens," she said. She was quickly reading as she signed every line that she was suppose to. After she was done she stood up and handed the papers to the man. He stood and took the papers. He checked over them carefully.
"Welcome aboard! You are now poolie Simons. PT is Tuesday 6:00 pm and Saturday 9:00 am," he explained. He gave her a brand new shirt and shorts that she was to wear. She nodded in approval as she turned away walking out. She had just started a new life. She wouldn't screw this one up.Jessica woke up and looked around. She remembered she was no longer home. She started making her house her home and started excersising.
Six Months Later
Jessica stood at the airport. She was about to board her plane to Parris Island, South Carolina. Many of the other recruits were hugging family goodbye as the passengers started boarding. She on the other hand texted her friends and certain family. They'd take her phone so she wasn't worried about replies. She got on the plane and went to sleep. This was gonna be a long thirteen weeks.Graduation Day
Jessica was picking up her bags to leave. She said goodbyes to her fellow platoon members before getting in a taxi for the airport. Once at the airport she changed into jeans, a loose black marine t shirt and kept on her dog tags and boots. She fixed her bun in the mirror. She hadn't seen herself in so long she almost forgot what she really looked like. Her blueish grey eyes sparkled and her light brown hair was nearly tucked away. Her once pale skin was now tanned and she smiled before grabbing her bag and boarding the plane to Ohio.Once pulling up to her grandparents Jessica paid the driver before making her way inside. She turned on her phone. She shifted through her group messages with her best friends. They were worried. She grabbed her keys but first she had a different stop. Her mom's house. She pulled up to the old two story farm house. Her eyes instantly shot to her brother's blue car. It was older and the mirror was taped on but he loved it. She made her way inside. Surprisingly the dogs didn't go crazy. They didn't even look as if she was gone. It kinda hurt. She ignored her brother yelling at the video game and walked straight for her mom's room. Her mom sat on her bed looking at her phone.
"For a mother who told her child to leave you sure did send a lot of text messages," she said calmly. She was only two inches taller than her mom. She was 5'5 but the boots added some. Her mom stood shocked to see her daughter standing there. She hadn't registered the fact that Jessica was wearing dog tags and combat boots.
"You never answered," she replied almost hurt.
"I was a little busy," Jessica shrugged.
"Sure. Sure you were," her mom remarked. Jess walked towards her. She took off her dog tags and held them out for her to look.
"I'm not kidding," she replied. Her mom's eyes widened looking at the tags.
"Why'd you join the Marines?" Her mom asked. Jess shrugged and turned away.
" I'm gonna see Ethan," she simply said walking into the family room where Ethan was studying his gaming scores.
"I don't think that'll help you with war," she stated. He jumped up and faced her. He had to of just gotten off because he still had on his uniform he looked her over and smiled.
" Dang sis. Them Marines really do fill out a person," he smiled. Jess laughed. She talked with her brother before heading to her friends.
