The morning started off with Jessica waiting out by the humvees. When her team arrived she knew she needed to go over the plan. Soon her teams arrived.
"We're parking the vehicles somewhere and hiding them. Then we will go in by foot to surprise them. They have four small housed made of concrete and God knows what else. They are unstable so if you feel like stuff is coming down get out. Raid the houses first. If we drive them out then we have their ammo stash. Watch for other as well as yourself. Go in together and leave together. Remeber your training and load up. Let's go!" Jessica stated hopping in the humvee. She waited until everyone was somewhere before driving off. Something felt wrong but she wouldn't admit it. Soon they got off the roads. The houses were in view so the parked and got out.
"Remeber they may have explosives. Watch your step and the houses. Move in," Jessica demanded. This was it. This was her revenge. They all ran in towards the houses. They got close then they all scattered. It was a easy way to cover ground and hard to get hit. Men started flooding out the houses and started firing. Jessica stood ready wasting no time shooting them. She kept them occupied while the others stormed the houses. More men flooded out. They were lower in numbers but didn't give up. Jessica felt two bullets enter her body. One in her right shoulder and another in her ribcage. It didn't feel like it got far though. She continued her mission. After all the men were gone they stormed the house. She investigated everything until she heard yelling.
"We got a C4 Bomb counting down from one minute!" A soilder yelled.
"Everybody out!" Jessica screamed into her ear piece so the others would leave the other houses. They all ran out and it turns out every house was rigged. Everyone was running and the bombs started to explode. Shrapnel flew and everyone hit the ground. Jessica stayed behind the others to keep them safe. She was at least fifty feet behind. She was watching her feet and knew they were in trouble. Jessica felt the earth start to tremble and she saw no one else felt it. Within seconds a blast threw her in the air. She hit the ground and instantly felt the impact. Her body was in pain all over and her helmet split from impact. She forced herself to her feet. Her team was about to turn for her when she started running. She stumbled but she got back to the humvee.
"Go!" She ordered. Everyone took off. She examined her wounds. Blood still dripped from her bullet wounds but now she was scratch up by shrapnel. That'd need surgery. She no longer felt the pain. She was numb. When they got back to camp they grabbed their gear and loaded up. While on the plane Sam tended to Jess's wounds. After hours she was done.
"How the hell did you get up and continue. Many wouldn't have gotten up," Sam stated.
"I had to get my team out. It didn't matter if I wanted to get up or not. Y'all needed me," Jess replied. She fell asleep but was woken up when everyone was cheering because they were about to land. She grabbed her gear. When the plane landed she was taken to the medical center for reevaluation. Soon the doctor came back.
"Well you appear fine. How so I will never understand. You have twenty days leave. On your way out stop by Sterling's office. He wants a word," the doctor said. Jessica nodded before grabbing her stuff and headed to Sterling's office. He was Luke's comanding officer. She knocked on the door and he gave her permission to come on. She stood at attention.
"Sir," she greeted.
"Your being promoted to sergeant. You've done good. Luke would be proud. You hold the record of most kills on a tour and best sniper. Be happy. Now get out of here. Your family awaits. They have been told you were in a accident but they weren't told anything else," he said.
"Thank you sir," she said. She took her stuff and walked out. She was nearing the terminal in the airport. She was definitely different. She'd been injured. She slept on the plane. Then she finally got home. She heard her brother talking.
"Ethan," she greeted. He ran over and hugged her.
"Careful. I'm broken," she joked. He looked her over.
"Damn what happened to you?" He questioned.
"Let's see I lost my fiance to a bullet, I took two bullets as souvenir but they got lodges in my body, uh a bomb went off and I flew oh
And I was hit with shrapnel so now I'm cut up," Jessica explained. Her brother looked sympathetic.
"How do you feel?" He asked.
"Numb. I don't feel pain or sadness. Hell the anger is even gone," Jess explained.
"I'm moving into an apartment near base during recovery. That way it's easier to make my way around. I'm moving next week," she explained. He nodded and walked back to the kitchen. Jess wasn't up for visiting so she texted everyone she knew that they could come see her if they wanted to. Her mom visited for a short time and her friends came. Everyone was way to emotional for Jess's liking but they'd been worried so they dealt with it. Jess's dad came down from Tennessee to make sure his daughter was ok. Some team members came here and there but that was about it. Jess had to tend to her wounds twice a day. The stitches bothered Jess but they had to stay inside. She had to keep a wrap around the bullet wounds so sometimes she wouldn't wear her shirt because the wrap covered her. It looked like a crop top on her but she liked it. That night she started packing her bags.
